Holidays and festivals in England are a time for families and friends to get together and enjoy a break from work or school. In many towns and villages, people take part in customs that have been around for centuries, whether it’s the colorful flash and lively beat of Morris dancing or the bonfire on Guy Fawkes Night.
Food often takes center stage during holiday celebrations. Perhaps the most famous holiday fare is Christmas pudding, a steamed dessert filled with dried fruits, such as plums and currants, and topped with a sweet sauce. At Easter, English cooks bake many types of sweets, such as hot cross buns or Easter biscuits. In Cornwall, an Easter specialty is bright yellow saffron buns, made with a spice that comes from the crocus flower.

Grilled Beef and Vegetable Skewers

October 5, 2009 by Charlie T

These colorful skewers of meat and vegetables are served during festive occasions, and they are especially loved by Korean children. This recipe works best with long metal skewers. If you use bamboo skewers, slice meat 1/4 inch thick. If you prefer, you can fry the skewers in a little vegetable oil instead of grilling or broiling them.

Chocolate Pastry

September 23, 2009 by Sophie G

A traditional French custom is to have a mid-afternoon snack of very strong coffee and a pastry or bread. Brioches are yeast breads rich in eggs and butter. They make delicious snacks and are generally eaten warm with unsalted butter and jam. Brioches are also available in American bakeries that sell French breads and pastries.

The recipe on below will make a snack that is something like the French brioche. If you are not able to shop at a French bakery, you can bake this very special treat.
