London’s NEW Ukrainian Restaurant Opens in the Old Dragon Gate Location!

The Worst Food Review Channel on YouTube. London, Ontario just got a brand‑new Ukrainian restaurant — Sonya Restaurant — now open at 489 Highbury Ave in the former Dragon Gate Chinese Restaurant location. Dragon Gate was a London classic for decades, and with its closure, the city has been waiting to see what would take over the space. I was invited in one day early during Sonya’s soft opening to get a first look at their menu, their food, and the brand‑new atmosphere inside this iconic Highbury address.

Sonya Restaurant brings traditional Ukrainian comfort food to London, serving dishes like pierogies, cabbage rolls, schnitzel, borscht, and homestyle meals made from scratch. With their grand opening happening this weekend, this is one of the first full reviews available online — perfect for anyone searching for new restaurants in London, Ontario or looking for authentic Ukrainian cuisine.

In this video, I walk through the full experience: the food, the flavours, the portion sizes, the pricing, and what it feels like to see a beloved Dragon Gate location transformed into something completely new. If you’re searching for new restaurants in London Ontario, Ukrainian food London Ontario, Highbury Ave restaurants, or best places to eat in London, this video will help you decide if Sonya Restaurant should be your next stop.

Whether you loved Dragon Gate and want to see what replaced it, or you’re excited to try a brand‑new Ukrainian spot in the city, this is your first look at Sonya Restaurant on Highbury Ave.

  1. Vareniki is something that I made with my Mother and enjoyed all my life. Even now when I make for my family it brings back special memories. ❤Cheers Eh 🍻 🇨🇦

  2. We used to live in the area years ago and Dragon Gate had some of the best Lunch Plate Noodle deals in the City. Couldn’t beat them for price and taste.

  3. We always went to Dragon Gate too Dave. Very sad when they closed. Now we must try Sengs. We do love Ukranian though.
