South Minneapolis restaurant shifts to donation model until ICE leaves Minnesota

On Jan. 26 the Minneapolis hippie diner Modern Times made an announcement: all their menu items are now free, unless you’re a federal agent.

The hours will remain the same, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, but the menu will be a bit smaller. The restaurant will run on donations. Servers will volunteer, but still be paid.

Dylan Alverson has owned the diner for 15 years. The restaurant is six blocks from where George Floyd was murdered in 2020, four blocks from where Renee Macklin Good was killed by an ICE agent and a neighborhood over from where Alex Pretti was killed by federal agents last week.

Alverson says they’re post-modern. Hence, the new name “Post Modern Times.”

    I wouldn't eat there if it were the last place on earth to eat.. They will be out of business within 6 months.

    Let’s see murder is down to a level that hasn’t been seen since 1900, violent crimes are way down Our borders are secure. Some of the worst criminals child traffickers, drug traffickers, human traffickers are now in jail or deported.All thanks to the FBI, Border Patrol and ICE!!!!     I love your plan. Figuring out how to avoid paying taxes for things that are not in our value system is moving into a congruent life. Go for it!

    Very smart. Good on them. We can't support these people with our tax dollars and it helps those in need. The rest of us can donate to support these lovely humans. It's too bad the world can't work like this.
