Pretend Cooking Show: Meatballs

#PretendCookingShow: Meatballs 🍝

While we patiently wait for Ina Garten’s newest cookbook (Barefoot Contessa: Go-To Dinners!) I am revisiting old favorites. This was super adapted for my picky little ones years ago— for the grown up, delicious, depth of flavor, actual recipe please see Barefoot Contessa: Family Style. (One thing about me: I’ve been known to travel with my @kitchenaid Stand Mixer and her pasta attachments 🥰). 🧅🍅🧄

Real Meatballs by @inagarten1083 (JG version)

Ingredients:
MEATBALLS
– 1 lb ground beef
– ½ lb dark ground turkey
– ½ lb ground pork (or 1 mild & 1 spicy pork sausage link)
– 1 egg
– ½ cup grated Parmesan
– 1 Tbsp Italian seasoning
– 1 tsp salt
– ½ tsp fresh ground pepper
– Olive oil and safflower oil for frying

SAUCE
– 2 28oz can crushed tomatoes
– 1 large yellow onion, grated
– 4 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
– ½ cup red wine
– Olive oil
– Salt
– Pepper

Directions:
1. Grate the onion. Mince the garlic. Set aside.
2. In a large bowl, combine all the meatball ingredients and thoroughly mix with your hands. When it is evenly mixed, shape them into balls. Set aside.
3. In a large pot, heat equal parts olive and safflower oils (~½ inch deep) until shimmering.
4. Brown meatballs in batches, turning to brown evenly. Place on paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil. When complete, dispose of oil, but do not clean the pot.
5. Add 1 Tbsp olive oil to pot. Turn stove to med heat.
6. Add grated onion, stir occasionally. When browned, add garlic. Stir for ~1 min.
7. Add the balsamic, stir, and then add red wine. Let the liquid cook off, stir occasionally.
8. Add tomatoes and bring to a low boil. Add a few teaspoons salt and pepper.
9. Submerge meatballs in sauce, cover pot leaving a crack for steam to escape. Turn to low and simmer for ~hour, stir occasionally.
10. Taste and add salt or pepper as needed.
11. YUM.

  1. I love these. But, I prefer it when you use the wide frame. The wide frame does a better job of capturing the relationship between your character and the food. The wide frame builds the emotional climax to the final scene where the food must finally be eaten.

  2. Wow not just a wondeful actress but a great cook. And with fresh pasta!! What else would you ask? A small hint to avoid stomach acids add a pinch of sugar with the sauce otherwise agreat recipie. Keep them coming.

  3. My whole family is Italian .,.u do not need to chop the onion,, leave the onion and garlic whole = fry it after ur drain the oil and still have that little bit in the bottom ,,,then leave the onion and garlic whole the entire time ur sauce cooks just like ur meatballs this way ur not eating chunks of it, ..

  4. Jennifer.. the next time you cook your meatballs. Do it exactly the way you make them except put the meatballs in the sauce raw.. and then simmer them for about an hour and 15 minutes.. a little strange to see you on YouTube, but OK.

  5. I'm loving these short, entertaining videos. Quick tutorials, but enough info to follow along. Great – please keep making these.

  6. Jen is an Aries with a Gemini Moon. This is why she's so positive, energetic, fun, loveable, silly, animated and cute 🥰

Watch out for Electra tho….she'll kick your @$$ 😎👍🙏

  7. This is the president of the United States, Jennifer. This is also the United States Air Force. I ran for president in 2020 and was warning the world about COVID-19 starting on 28 January after viewing a video out of China, which was probably the Dr. that warned the world initially and died of Covid and I warned everyone in the west. My communications were being interrupted the entire time I was trying to get picked up for president from the very beginning and then they deleted 10,000 tweets in March to hide the fact the day did not respond correctly. Millions of people died across the globe and there has been a cover-up of that along with the Epstein files and yes, it’s absolutely related. Both political parties have been identified as criminal terrorist organizations all the way to the United Nations and then I told them I am now the de facto president of the United States because both political parties are sitting here acting as criminal groups that I’ve committed Rico crimes using corporations while they are Controlling the government across all three branches in a way that was set up so that they would not do that.

  8. I’ve been doing my job since 1982 when I turned 18 and no one is gonna sit here and put criminals in charge of this country while they attack their military. That’s exactly what’s happening and every piece of paperwork internally to government all the way to the United Nations have not been answered at all when I am the government and they don’t get a choice.

  9. Not a bad idea to wear some closed toe shoes (e.g. Crocs) in the kitchen. They can protect your feet from hot oil spills, broken glass, dropped knives and give you some extra comfort and grip.

  10. First. Love your pretend cooking show. Only ever saw it on Instagram. Happy to find you here. And that cookbook and that sauce are my FAVs. I make that sauce multiple times a month. Oddly never made the meatballs. ❤ The pancakes in that cookbook are the best. Also a home staple.

  11. Please call Meghan and invite her over for a few tips on how to actually prepare a meal, you can also teach her how to be charming and entertaining while really cooking…..Love the video.
