Though on a typical day, at least in Cape Town, you're better off going into the tunnel near the Company Gardens and ordering something from one of the many stalls in the food bazaar.
You can definitely tell that some areas are geared more for tourists, while others are more for locals.
But even the tourist places are nice if you can afford. I get the feeling the US stole the exposed brick aesthetic from us, but it just doesn't have the same soul when your restaurant isn't built out of the remains of an old biscuit mill.

The not eating at restaurants where there's only white people is real. Wife and I went out to eat one time w/ FIL at the only non korean owned chinese restaurant in my hometown (1 family owns 5 out of the 6 there). It was staffed by only white people and all the other customers were geriatric white people. Food was $$, the whitest chinese food possible, and sad thing was the restaurant used to be the afore mentioned family's high end sitdown restaurant .

1st off its either a brewer or a winery, not a restaurant. 2nd I swear I've been in that exact location.
