They MOCKED this Canadian food for 50 years. Now it’s iconic.
The real story of poutine — a messy pile of fries, cheese curds, and gravy that was so embarrassing, people in Quebec hid the fact they ate it.
Born in a tiny rural snack bar in the late 1950s, poutine spent decades being mocked as unsophisticated junk food. It was banned from schools. Used to ridicule an entire culture. Then a Montreal chef put foie gras on it, fast food chains picked it up, and in 2016 it was served at a White House state dinner.
From shame to national symbol. That’s Meal Mysteries.

The word "poutine" literally means "a mess" in Quebec French. The name stuck because the restaurant owner thought mixing fries and cheese curds looked like a disaster. What's a food YOU were embarrassed to admit you loved?
If you haven't had real poutine with fresh cheese curds that squeak, you haven't lived. No substitutes, no shortcuts.!!!
