  1. I realised after spending the last few weeks in the UK just how different the dining culture is. Dining solo in Japan is definitely a much bigger deal and feels a lot more normalised.
In this video, heres five types of restaurants/specialties that I typically dine at the most alone. (And I've skipped the obligatory Ichiran ramen shop booths, as they're rather well known these days!).

  2. I feel like Japan might be the only place I would feel ok eating alone… still might be kinda odd since I'm not used to it tho lol.

  3. Thank you for your erm "hard" work. O.K. the editing and stuff maybe takes time and effort. And learning Japanese so you can function normally in the society in order to bring us great content, yeah maybe that took a little time and a bit of effort.

  4. I feel old I watched this and went to the basement to pet my old school gameboy. Man those things last forever dont they?. Good times but Chris what is your fave gameboy game?.

  5. Chris speaks truly, dining by oneself in Japan is so comfortable for solo female travellers like me 🤗 I love that an introvert walking into a cafe or a ramen joint is never made to feel socially awkward in Japan 😊

  6. The AbroadBoy interstitial screens are pure genius. As was the planning involved to somehow manage two tonkatsus.

  7. 2:55 oh, wow. A rating system that makes sense and where you use the full scale. I didn't realise it was possible.

  8. The cyclethons will continue until delicious food ceases… you might be doing them for the rest of eternity.

  9. I was just in Tokyo/Osaka a few weeks ago for the 3rd time. But this one, 2 of the places I tried to schedule on Tabelog only accepted a 2+ people reservation

  10. When we were in Japan for 3 week last year we ate a more, smaller, businesses and "izzys".
All in all – they were better than waiting in line at the bigger places.

  11. So that's why the chef at that tonkatsu place looked in my direction and said f*cking delicious. I thought he was talking about me.

  12. As tasty as all of this looks.
And as much as I love fried and unhealthy food.
    What I would ask you.

Could you switch up and do a set of restaurants with tasty healthy food ?

  13. #3 "So far one of the benefits of dining solo is the absence of being judged by your friends"
But Chris, your friends know your YouTube Channel. I'm not sure that line works here even if it's for your audience 🤣

  14. I don't have a problem dining alone at all, whether in the UK, Japan or anywhere. The first time I did it in a posh Michelin starred place in London I was very self-conscious, but I got over that after my first visit over 25 years ago and have never looked back. IME it's a state of mind thing, coupled with being psychologically shackled by our own traditional cultural and parochial values.

Dining alone is a truly hedonistic pleasure: you can eat what you want, choose whatever wine you want, have a chat with the waiting staff, read your iReader device.

Best of all, when it comes to splitting the bill, you don't get Mable and Martin complaining that they didn't have a starter or some bollox.

I was at the counter alone at the Joel Robuchon in Roppongi on Christmas Day 3 months ago, I ended up chatting to a Japanese family of three sat next to me, who helped me finish off my bottle… and I helped them finish off theirs!

Unfortunately counter dining has never really taken off particularly well in the UK.

(I did come to your LOST bar in a December 2024 visit on my own, but when I got there you were closed 🙁 staff shortage or something.)

  15. Man there’s some really good edits and lines in this video. Well done sir. I like all ur videos but they’re definitely getting more refined and polished

  16. Chris is a full on food tuber at this point and I'm all for it 😂❤
5 of the 6 latest videos are all food related lmaooo
