Every year, the Michelin Guide awards stars to some of the best restaurants in the world. And while the stars go to individual places, certain cities consistently stand out.

This comparison is based on 2025 Michelin Guide data. We’re looking at cities by the total number of Michelin-starred restaurants — from 1 to 3 stars — to see where fine dining is most concentrated.

At the top, Tokyo, Paris, and Kyoto dominate. These cities combine long culinary traditions with highly structured training systems. There’s a level of discipline and consistency that keeps standards high across a large number of restaurants.

Then there are cities like London, New York, and Hong Kong. These are more fluid. Chefs move between cities, concepts evolve quickly, and the dining scene is shaped by international influence. The result is less uniform, but often more experimental.

China’s major cities — Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen — are growing fast. The number of starred restaurants has increased steadily, showing how quickly the fine dining scene is developing there.

Southern Europe is also strong. Cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Milan, and Naples benefit from deep food cultures, but the Michelin presence is more spread out rather than concentrated in one single city.

In Northern Europe, places like Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Stockholm focus more on fewer, highly influential restaurants rather than large numbers. The impact is high even if the total count is lower.

In the U.S., the stars are concentrated in a handful of cities — New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. — rather than evenly distributed.
