From legendary dumplings to a hidden coffee bar, a stunning laneway restaurant, and one of Melbourne’s oldest pubs, this is the ultimate guide to Melbourne laneway dining.
🥟 Shandong Mama Mini — We kick things off with a decades-long favourite. Their pan-fried seafood dumplings are genuinely unique — think mackerel mousse with coriander, ginger & sesame oil, plus a juicy pork & dill dumpling that you won’t find anywhere else.
☕ Two Conversations — A hidden-but-not-hidden laneway coffee spot with zero signage and seriously great coffee. Thomas orders a magic (a Melbourne classic — ask for it, it’s often not on the menu!), while Sheena goes for an earthy, creamy hojicha latte.
🍝 ALT Pasta Bar — A gorgeous red-brick sanctuary serving a two-course lunch for just $55. We’re talking sous vide scallops with yuzu ponzu, chargrilled king prawns with mango salsa, Kampot pepper cacio e pepe with gorgonzola, and a nduja & Morton Bay bug pasta. Plus complimentary house-made potato sourdough focaccia with whipped mushroom butter that takes three days to make. Utterly delectable.
🍺 The Mitre Tavern — We finish with cold beers at one of Melbourne’s most storied pubs, operating since 1868 (built in 1837!). A pint of Furphy and a pot of Mitre Lager — affordable, atmospheric, and full of history.
