This past December I met up with my friends Greg Ray and Chef Joe from Outdoor Solutions for an ambitious (more ambitious than I realized at the time!) elk hunt. We had tags for cow elk in Unit 356 or New Mexico, and this was to be a overland hunt over several days…

Its Great To Be Out In Nature!
Want a challenge? Try black powder hunting! π
I didn't even realise there are Elks in New Mexico, are they naturally there? Or wait, maybe it's a Name Difference. in Germany we say "Elch" but we mean European Moose i guess
We do have them here in Germany (reintroduced since most were hunted until none were left in the 1800s
Prost & Cheers from the Snow-Covered Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
I've been trying to get a hunt for fo rmule and elk like the last 4 years but I never get the draw. The amount of hunters in nm is crazy
good one
Seeing this, I'd like to see Ian appear in MeatEater
Getting a shot at any elk ain't bad. Getting a shot at a bull is a good hunt. Taking a shot at 600 plus yards is pretty much stretching things under hunting conditions, so a solid kill at that range would be great luck. Not wounding it even greater.
This looks a little bit similar to Reindeer hunting that we do in Norway. I didnt really know or think there were any particularly similar hunting to that in the states. There is a caveat though that reindeer hunting in Norway is typically quite a bit more challenging terrain and even further from civilization. Add the fact light is waning much earlier and you risk ending up in unfortunate and dangerous situations where you have to carry very heavy packs of meat down dark and very steep mountain sides.
I shoot birds with my camera.
it better be with a french rifle
That is great, I wonder what historical rifle would you take for elk hunting?
I count every hunting trip I survive as a success whether I get an animal or not. The experience is the reward.
This hunting video is much better that your previous hunting videos because its what most hunters experience.
Lets go!
…EXCELLENT video!!!…π…
Whacking bambi π’π€£
In other words this was a real hunt.
Better a clean miss than a wounded animal. Theres always another hunt. Got to leave it to Ian. Keeps on the move and embraces life. No grass growing under his feet. Young folks pay attention on how to live. Life goes by quicker than you think.
Ive been a Subscriber for a fkn decade
Why the fk do you need to kill, any fkn thing, dude?
This guy looks like ian mccollum from forgotten weapons
Was lucky enough to go on Elk hunt back in the early 80's in Colorado. Camped in a Teepee for four days. Last day got a nice bull at just around 170 yards. The carrying out was a job π€ ππΊπΈ
Thank you for this look into a – to me – very foreign culture
Glad to see Ian in my home state
Shame the elk didn't shoot back, ftw.
get a Oryx tag next year
Excellent examples of ethical harvesting. Looking forward to more videos like this.
So. Africa here. We are intensely interested in the calibre, bullet weight and type (standard, premium or monolithic) used. Nice venison, try to find a recipe for biltong.
