How IHOP’s “Great” Idea Went Terribly Wrong

For decades, IHOP was the place you went when you wanted pancakes, coffee, and maybe to make a few questionable life choices at 2 a.m. But behind the blue roofs and bottomless coffee is a story that starts with nuclear panic… and peaks with one of the internet’s most infamous marketing stunts.

What do you think of this stunt? Did you ever eat at IHOB? How was the burger?

  1. To be fair, a mediocre burger is significantly better than a fantastic pancake. It speaks to the depravity of humanity that an entire franchise could be built around a D-tier food.

  2. A friend's husband was the Executive Chef for IHOP (yes they have them). I used to love IHOP, taking my ex's grandkids to my local ihop.

  3. There are several IHOPs near me — and they're like totally unrelated restaurants. One in a more "downtown" (but still suburban) location I haven't visited in ages because the last 2 times I noticed 6-legged critters moving around… and the neighborhood had changed to where late-night pancakes just weren't that safe anymore… although there was that one time when I went with a friend after a late movie and a drop-dead-gorgeous young woman came in still wearing her sparkly evening gown, 6" heels, rhinestone tiara, and "Miss [something]" sash, straight from the pageant she'd just won. (She was accompanied by her proud parents.) Another location about 15 minutes in one direction was my family's old standby for years, delivering steady, count-on-it quality, but it was often so crowded that we could wait up to 20 minutes to get seated. Another location that opened recently just a few minutes from my house is a total mystery because we've NEVER seen more than a handful of customers in the place — like, how do they stay in business? (It doesn't help that their food quality is variable and rarely at the better end of the spectrum.) Then there's another location about 15 minutes in yet another direction; it's the only one open 24 hours, and we've been there a few times with friends after various events. It's not bad, and we often see large family groups of 3 or even 4 generations eating super-late dinners… but c'mon, how much food can you really eat just a few minutes before midnight?

  4. I ran straight to ihop when i heard they were doing burgers! Unfortunately i got sick after, it was.. not great.. i was so excited too 😢

  5. Ate at an IHOP last October because they were the only place serving burgers at 9 AM when I was getting up early for vacation. Food was really solid but it was crazy expensive for a burgers, fries, and a coke.

  6. My mom, brother, and I went to Ihop recently. It was absolutely disgusting and so expensive. It's nothing like when I was a kid.

  7. 1:00 I walled past an IHOP by LAX Fairfield by Marriott. It’s always near empty. Why not eat bagel & eggs at home? 😮😮

  8. I didn't realize until I was in my 30s that IHOP was International House of Pancakes. I only knew that name from old shows and cartoon references and thought that restaurant was gone.

  9. IHOP is still better than Denny's. I like their pancakes. Denny's pancakes have an odd taste to them. I don't know what it is, but I don't like it.

  10. Wow. People suck. I thought it was a cute marketing stunt and I remember hoping they'd install a spinning P and it always rotates between P and B. I do like IHOP. The problem for me is their location. They are always out of the way for me.
