Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal joined us in the NYT Cooking studio kitchen to share a beloved family recipe for banana bread and chat about working together on “The Bride!,” a film written and directed by Maggie, starring Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale and Jake.
Growing up in Los Angeles, the siblings would sometimes come home from school to a flurry of baked goods, made by their mother, the screenwriter Naomi Foner. (According to Jake, it was a bit of a procrastination tactic.) Now, the siblings bake the childhood treat to suit their adult tastes.

Why’s jake kinda 🫠
So excited to see this banana bread recipe. I’ve got one I like, love these two. Should be a fun episode!
They’re so cute 🥰
No idea who these people are. But really, anyone can make banana bread.
looks up kasha varnishkes
Of the two I never would’ve guessed that Jake is the baker.
so surprised it was banana bread. I expected like some kind of 300 year old Swedish pistachio cake or something. And Jake is like Chris Hemsworth. He can just too many things well and can eat half a cake and look like he does.
They seem like such a delight !
Mixing that much after adding the flour… They are cute, but I wouldn't bake like them. 😁
The title is cut off on mobile and it says “bake a child” 😂😂😂
I don't love the "celebrity/actor" cooking videos.
I always wished for a brother
They don't fight like siblings at all, they are soo sweet together.
Why don't you make some delicious gefilte fish?
Yummi.
That was fun! My first time seeing (the smart and talented) Jake and Maggie together. They have such a great relationship.
Jake is such a control freak 🙂
That “HE BIT ME” came out so quick before the person could finish the question 😂 such good sibling vibes these two have, so much love, it’s very sweet.
Both are sooo talented in what they have done!
If you want to up your Banana Bread to the next level add DARK CHOCOLATE. Hot out of the oven & it’s delicious & melted into the banana bread. Yup, you’re welcome.
Jake held the door open for me once at the Williams Sonoma in Chelsea!!
no nuts for mine, thanks!
Looks a bit dry
I love Maggie's natural beauty! She looks so stunning! ❤
I've been a TS fan since pretty much the start, I love the RED era and ATW is one of my favorite songs, but nothing in this world can make me hate Jake or stop having a crush on him!
Kind of funny the end with the 'This is Jake's Version' and 'Our version'😂
Jake Gyllenhaal is my favorite actor, so I've been waiting to see him cook in this series because, in most of his interviews, he always talks about how much he loves to cook and how good he is at it, and I'm so glad he did this with Maggie as part of promoting her movie. I loved their dynamic and how he praises her; you could really see the love, respect, and admiration between them. She really is a great director and actress; the talent in the family is truly astronomical. I just love them both so much.
I am OBSESSED with this! I adore them both and to see them cooking together as siblings, talking about their mom's recipe?! I need more of them pls!
Finally! Cooking and baking suits Jake so much 🍰
