The Ultimate Colombo Food Tour: 140 Years of Food in 48 Hours

Colombo is a city in transition, and in this 48-hour journey, we navigate its high-energy pulse to find its culinary heartbeat.

We begin at the tree-covered alfresco oasis of Barefoot café, a space dating back to the sixties, before delving into Green Cabin, an institution that has been serving traditional Sri Lankan fare since 1884, staying true to century-old recipes.

Our exploration takes us to the Dutch Burgher Union (DBU), where we bypassed the lamprais to savour a range of their classic bakes, and The Gallery Café. Here, international and local flavours are served in a verdant space that exudes the character of its creator, the legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa. We also see the city’s modern evolution at Shoulders, where Greek recipes meet Sri Lankan ingredients, and Blue Orbit, a revolving restaurant atop the 27th floor of the Lotus Tower featuring an enormous 300+ dish spread.

A significant part of this journey was spent with Sri Lanka’s prolific restaurateur, Harpo Gooneratne. From the cozy, unpretentious vibe of The Commons Coffee House to the storied, century-old colonial home of Bayleaf, Harpo reflects on 20 years of navigating the country’s challenges with a “never say die” resilience.

From simple, comforting pastas to the classic kothu parotta, this vlog is a tribute to the grit and craft that keeps Colombo’s kitchens firing.
We truly enjoyed our time here and hope you enjoyed this series too.

  1. Great video! I’m Sri Lankan and lived in Colombo for over 10 years, but I’ve never been to any of the places you visited. They’re definitely going on my bucket list for next time

  2. Transformation of Colombo is truly Immense. I was born and raised in Colombo, although I now live in Australia for nearly three decades. My School was close to the Dutch Bugher Union. Back then it was an Antique Showroom. I’ve never been to any of these Restaurants, however shall do in the near future. The Quaint Charm of the Old houses resonates with me as my family house is also a Colonial bungalow. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Colombo. Appreciate very much for the informative content. Hope to see you back in SL some time soon! Thank you! God Bless!!! 😊❤

  3. Hats off Kripal! No pun intended 😊 one of the best vlogs showcasing the hidden gems of Sri Lanka—places rarely highlighted by most influencers

  6. Safe travel sir srilanka hates Hindus and Indians more than Pakistan even traveling alone in pakistan far safe than srilanka 😂

  7. my biggest regret of all types of social media influencers, nowhere at the start or end of the video credits are given to support staff (like editors, cameraman, etc)
