My Beautiful Peaceful life in African Village Cooking most Nutritious Lunch for Family
Omena is a small fish found mainly in Lake Victoria.
Its scientific name is Rastrineobola argentea.
In English, people often compare it to sardines, but it’s actually a different species—just similar in size and how it’s eaten.
Omena are naturally small fish, not baby fish.
Omena is very popular around:
Kenya
Uganda (called mukene)
Tanzania (called dagaa)
Similar small fish (like sardines) are eaten worldwide:
Portugal
Spain
Japan
Philippines
Nutrition (very powerful!)
Omena may be small, but they’re super nutritious:
High in protein (good for muscles)
Rich in calcium (you eat the bones too)
Contains omega-3 fats (good for brain & heart)
Has iron (helps prevent anemia)
That’s why many people say omena is a “superfood” especially in villages.
🍳 How is it cooked?
Common ways in Kenya:
Fried omena
Wash, fry in oil until crispy
Stewed omena
Fry onions + tomatoes, add omena, cook into a sauce
Sun-dried (traditional)
Most omena is dried first, then cooked later
Some people also deep-fry until crunchy and eat like snacks.
🍽️ How is it served?
Usually served with:
Ugali (most common)
Rice
Chapati
Sometimes with greens like sukuma wiki
Affordable – cheaper than meat or big fish
Long shelf life – dried omena lasts long
Nutritious – especially for children and mothers
Cultural food – very common in Luo communities
Omena vs Sardines (quick difference)
Omena = freshwater, very tiny, eaten whole
Sardines = mostly sea fish, slightly bigger

Hello Tee,Mama,Ladies and children! I love seeing the kids jumping rope, that was my favorite thing to do, when I was a child! Ì don't see too many kids jumping rope now,or riding bikes, most kids in the US are in the house, playing games, so sad😢! Your garden is coming along nicely!
