Chihuahua: The Mennonites & Their World-Record Breaking Cheese | Pati’s Mexican Table S13 E8

In the early 20th century, Mennonite settlers from Germany arrived in Chihuahua, Mexico, seeking farmland and religious freedom. In this episode of Pati’s Mexican Table, I’m in Cuauhtémoc after their most famous contribution to the region’s cuisine – their cheese. Just how famous is it?

Since 2012, the Mennonite run Pampas Cheese Factory has held the Guinness World Record for largest cheese – clocking in at 3 tons! I meet their general manager Johan Guenther, who goes by John, to learn all about how it goes from milk to perfectly melty, buttery and delicious cheese. And he tests my strength, too.

On the other side of town, the Schmitt family is using that cheese to make the tastiest pizza at Los Arcos Pizzería. I had to try it before leaving town.

I brought some of that famous cheese home to make the classic Chihuahua style potato soup eaten throughout the state. Plus, a one of a kind peach cheesecake with a pinole (popcorn) crust you won’t want to miss.
