8 US Restaurants That Became Too Greedy and Paid the Price for It in 2026
7 major U.S. restaurant chains increased prices, reduced value, and watched customers leave—here’s why the strategy backfired.
For decades, fast food and casual dining succeeded because customers felt they were getting a fair deal. Recently, several well-known restaurant chains have tested that relationship—raising menu prices beyond typical inflation levels, shrinking portions, simplifying ingredients, and assuming loyal customers would keep coming back.
In this analysis, we examine 7 prominent American restaurant brands that faced growing backlash after aggressive pricing decisions, including Starbucks, McDonald’s, Subway, Red Lobster, Applebee’s, IHOP, Cracker Barrel, and Outback Steakhouse. Declining foot traffic, location closures, staff dissatisfaction, investor pressure, and even financial distress have followed for some companies.
This isn’t about nostalgia—it’s about consumer behavior. When everyday items become noticeably more expensive while portions and perceived quality decline, many customers quietly change their habits.
We break down what shifted, why customer loyalty weakened, and what these patterns could mean for the future of dining in the United States.
Watch to the end to see which restaurant chains could face similar challenges next—and how consumer decisions influence industry trends.

Lessen the product and raise the prices NEVER works
“Only” places deserve to die. Drive thru only is just as exclusive if not more so than the “whites only” places especially in cities with transit. You can’t take the bus. You can’t walk up or roll up in a wheelchair.
I never patronized any of them! Cheaper to eat at home. Also the last time I went with someone to get something at Panera they were out of bread!! That was 15 years ago.
I miss Red Lobster the most of all them, I loved eating there and now have no place in my area to have a great seafood dinner. I wish somehow this restaurant could be rescued and given back to us. I no longer eat at any of the fast-food places, they ruined themselves with their greed and goofy changes.
…and that's the common theme – instead of absorbing higher overhead prices, the restaurants passed them along to their customers…unfortunately, that's the story of our country today
One junk-food restaurant after another. No wonder why Americans are fat. Nothing but fried crap.
Our local smalltown tourist office pushed for people to go to local mom n pop restaurants that just opened. Got a gift certificate to go, they shut down n didnt honor or reimburse for money paid for certificate. Buyer beware
I stopped Subway when they limited my black olives 6 per foot long sandwich.
Private Equity buying a company, is a perfect way to destroy that company.
What amazes me, is how in other developed countries, restaurants pay their own employees, rather than get customers to pay them though tips, have lower prices and manage to do well. The system in the U.S. is completely broken.
You're spot on about McDonalds–mediocre quality and priced WAY more than it's worth. But what really killed the Golden Arches for me is their flat out disdain for anyone walking into the dining room and wanting to place an order with a real human being. Today's McDonalds have maybe one window station that's often unmanned. They want you to order on their kiosk or their app, pick up your order and leave. They don't want your cash. They want you to pay with a card. It's painfully clear that they don't want to have to interact with you personally. McDonalds is now the coldest, most unwelcoming, most impersonal dining experience you can possibly imagine. I'll never go there again.
I haven't eaten at many of those places. I cook everyday, garden and grow my own herbs. Not hard.
I love that Starbucks is guilty of the widest pay cap because that is where the commies go! I went to university in Seattle and the only thing I bought at Starbucks was a cup with a lid so I could make my own coffee and carry it on the bus. Startbucks has been a rip off for decades.
This video forgot to mention Sysco food service trucks. All your fast casual food comes on the back of one of those trucks.
Oh FYI private capital did the same thing to Sears, Radio Shack, and K-mart. I am a capitalist but venture capitalism is def evil.
Where I live in a small town there's a bar and grill you can get shrimp and fries under 10 bucks same with a burger and fries
4:20 Went to Texas Roadhouse a couple of months ago. OMG talk about sticker shock!
I never understood the red lobster thing
Correct
Starbucks is pricey
With the exception of Starbucks, I have either NEVER eaten in any of these restaurants or only ate in them a few times many years ago. And now Starbucks is permanently off my list. My last cup of plain black coffee there cost $3.50 and had been adulterated with artificial sweetener that I had not asked for but which the teenage "barista" had added at her own volition. I complained and the girl replaced the coffee but only giggled at the mistake, even when I pointed out that this artificial sweetener could have provoked a huge allergic reaction in an unsuspecting customer. These ripoff eateries all deserve to fail!
These places never were bargains except when compared to now. I have been spoiled by living in Las Vegas where casino restaurants were real bargains, but they're expensive now too.
Corporate greed always destroys everything.
Starbucks is OK for the plainest sm coffee : the food there just looks DEAD//there always too many kids behind counter for a cup of coffee
When a Nation can no longer afford to eat …………………………………………………………..
Nowhere in American life is Greedflation more evident than in restaurant prices. It's a shame because dining out and socializing at restaurants used to be such a wonderful American experience. Now, fewer and fewer people can afford it.
Good. Let them all fail.
KFC should have been #1 in this list, they are more cheap, greedy, and uncaring than any other brand on our planet.
How is Subway a resaurant? They don't even have tables or a counter to sit at.
You have the power. Stop spending your $$ at these overpriced joints and prepare your own food.
It's not just chains that sold out to private equity firms. We had a local resto-bar that was a favorite around here for decades. Then, almost two years ago, the owners sold it to three guys who owned another pub-grub type place a few towns away. They kept most of the menu, but jacked the prices way up, ran the place into the ground, and it was eventually shut down by the county last November for repeated health code violations the owners couldn't be bothered to remedy upon re-inspection. Attempts to sell it, or even lease out the space (they supposedly own the entire shopping center building complex) have come to nothing.
Eff McDonzlds. I was a customer for 60 years and have watched their price of a hamburger increase by 1000 percent. Most egregious,IMHO were the price hikes after COVID. They have lost me as a loyal customer.
I used to order Subway once a week. No more. Why? Price. McDonald's "new" Big Arch, was nothing but a ripoff to customers. They called it a new item. Lie. It was nothing but 2 quarter pounders put together. After I saw the salt, cost and calories, I said no. To me, McDonald's is not to be trusted. Thank goodness I never tried Panera Bread food. Serving an item that took the life of more than 1 person is unforgivable. I will never give them a try. Jersey Mike's, more or less a Subway in disguise, but not price. Tried them once. It was enough. Nothing special and overpriced. Jimmy John's, same as Subway, overpriced, little flavor. There used to be a thing called "quality control" in the food business. This was simply double checking orders before they left the business for deliveries. Vanished. Denny's and McDonald's have screwed me over a dozen times, each on deliveries. Double checking orders before they leave would cut down on customer complaints and refunds, but they just won't take the 15 seconds to check. I have zero patience with them anymore. I call and complain and have gotten refunds many times. They don't deserve a break today and only the customers can let them know about it.
I stopped eating at all of these once prices got greedy. You forgot little ceasers. $5 ok $7.70 HELL NO
We haven't patronized any of those places for 10+ years… along with Chili's, Olive Garden, Chipotle, and many others. Local 'mom & pop' only.
If you think restaurants are too expensive, quit whining and quit going
Eating out used to be fun and tasty. Now it is neither.
The advent of the air fryer makes cooking at home closer to fast food in many cases. Healthier as well as cheaper and more sanitary.
Haven’t gone to ANY restaurant in several years. Between high prices, poor food quality and overstressed staff it’s just not worth it any more.
Everyone stop buying convenience. It is not worth it at all!!!
I don't go to any of these restaurants anymore… haven't for years. I would feel like an idiot if I walked into any of them. I don't go to restaurants for abuse. This is not a Monty Python skit.
When I drive into a Popeye's parking lot and I see pigs fleeing through the door, I drive away quickly. The place where I live was filthy. No second chance. I don't have to go there. There is a Publix across the street with better deli food and cheaper prices.
Have you gone to any of the places mentioned here and felt something hit you in the back as you were leaving?
A Whataburger single is about 6 bucks and tastes great. Go there instead.
I remember everyone had that 5 dollar foot long song in there head . I used to eat up to 3 times a week at Subways.
Good riddance , don't need your overpriced delights…
Recently I stopped in a restaurant and had fried flounder that had been deep fried that burn 🔥 the top of my mouth … 👄 A mishap that lasted over a week … Just color me GONE fools….😢…..
I was expecting to see Wendy's.
I don't think people making the "choice" to cook at home is a bad outcome. It has always been less expensive to cook at home if you plan. I love to eat out, I don't hate restaurants, but Americans became dependent upon fast food instead of preparing meals at home. Don't say "we don't have time". What too many people lack is the basic skill of prioritizing. Ef predatory capitalism.
Im shocked Applebees aint in here
Several of the chains mentioned are still busy in my neighborhood. There's a Starbucks, McDonald's, Dunkins, Wendy's, Subway, Little Caesars, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell and they're all busy. Subway doesn't even honor coupons because they don't need to. I'm not sure why they're all so busy. There's a high school nearby so maybe that's it?
Fast food is following the Vegas, car manufacturers model of catering to the 10% rich whales to pick up the slack. So let them rot and go belly up. Used to be could go to a fast food place for cheaper than buying stuff from the store and doing it yourself. I can now buy 2 days of food from the store for the same price. Did it to themselves!
I won`t eat McDonald's for free.
