We Spent £1000 On A 3 Michelin Star Chef’s Table For My 40th | Cartmel

In this episode we are in Cartmel in the Lake District. Just the two of us — kid free weekend away for Simon’s 40th birthday.

Rebecca’s birthday present to Simon was a chef’s table experience at Aulis Cartmel — the private development kitchen adjacent to Simon Rogan’s three Michelin star restaurant L’Enclume. Six seats. A private chef. A dedicated sommelier. Every single ingredient grown on their own farm in the Cartmel Valley.

It was the best meal we have ever eaten. By a long way.

Before the meal we spend the afternoon exploring Cartmel village — one of the most beautiful little villages in the Lake District. Independent shops, vintage stores, a bookshop, and lunch at the Devonshire Arms. No Morrisons, no Starbucks, no McDonald’s. Just proper local businesses doing things the right way.

The evening at Aulis was something we’ll never forget. Watching the chef prepare every course in front of us, the sommelier walking us through every wine pairing, course after course of the most extraordinary food we’ve ever had. Cornish crab, West Coast skate, pork from Gaythorne Hall Farm, Malwina strawberry with Wraysholme yoghurt. Impossible to pick a favourite.

The next morning we head to Rogan and Co for breakfast before closing out the video.

Was it worth £1000? We give our verdict.
