The Ultimate Small Garden Makeover: An Outdoor Dining Room Anyone Can Create!

Dreaming of a garden that’s perfect for entertaining? In this video, I transform a compact 4m x 3m space into a beautiful outdoor dining room using clever planting, practical design and simple landscaping ideas.

Whether you have a small garden, courtyard or patio, this design can help turn your outdoor space into a natural extension of your home. I’ll guide you through the entire makeover step by step.

First I use 4 simple planters of different sizes as ‘walls’ and then add plants to surround my seating area with colour, foliage and scent. I always place all my plants first before planting until I’m happy that my scheme is working.

I then show you how to paint a plain garden dining set to complement the colour scheme and the planters. The end result is a great little mini garden makeover, perfect for summer entertaining!

  1. Yep I have that same garden Table. But I cannot afford all those plants. But I do have a nearby raised bed with herbs in it.

  2. Hello my friend, wow amazing beautiful garden.👌👌👌👌👌👌👌❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  3. I didn't realise that you could put a tree in such a small container. It's definitely giving me some ideas!

  4. Perhaps you should specify the areas in the world where this can be done. Where I live it's jungle plants and bouganvilla and sometimes orchids only.

  5. I thought o no box, then realised. The moths are heading up the country dam things the caterpillars gave me nightmares after picking so many off my hedges a few years back. It’s Titchmarsh village fete tomorrow Alan, I live in Thrapston just down the road. If you are going this year pop into 24 to take a look at my silver birch tree please, I think it has perished, it’s over 45 years old all the leaves have turned brown. Your voice is so relaxing. Everything looks fantastic, I loved the bird of paradise plants. 🇬🇧❤

  6. I love foxgloves but they are poisonous so i wouldnt have them near somewhere im going to eat. Sorry Alan. I love it otherwise!

  7. This does look fabulous, but, there are not many people who can afford to purchase or be given plants that are established to create this instant impact, perhaps a video on how to do this without the cost of established plants? And how to create it over time on a budget, which most people are probably trying to do? Instant impact on a budget? There's a video idea ? .. Love the new garden taking shape, looks great already..

  8. Yesterday I bought a Scabious and a Lavender and thought "Alan would approve" 😄 seeing them both here has put a smile on my face! 🐝🪻

  9. I have been looking at my small outdoor space for two seasons now knowing it has potential but never been able to visualize how to transform it into something that actually feels like a proper outdoor room worth spending time in. Which element of this makeover would you say creates the biggest visual impact for someone working with a very tight budget who needs to prioritize the changes that make the space feel completely different without redoing everything at once?

  10. Hi Alan iv got a small garden an iv made it beautiful, they are all in tubs an beer barrels iv got beautiful trees an shrubs ,bonsai they are over 80 years old thank you Alan lv Ann ❤️❤️🇬🇧🌹🌹💐💐🌻🌻

  11. It's lovely Alan. I remember I was in the florist of a posh suburb and the assistant corrected my pronunciations of pittosporum – so I very kindly said "That's interesting, because Alan Titchmarsh who trained at Kew pronounces …" And I said it with such confidence. Our gardens and lives are better with you in them x

  12. I love this, very timely as I am just about to do my patio and I have fallen in love with this and it will fit perfectly!

  13. Hi Alan. That patio looks awesome. I love foxgloves, they are such pretty flowers in any garden. The sage green table and chairs fit in so well. 🌹🌹🌺💐🌸🌷🌷🌻

  14. Love the videos Alan however the image is being dimmed by the mask for the texts. It was there all the time and made the whole image very dull and dark. you need to talk to your editor.

  15. Wish we had the weather to sit in the garden……..had intermittent rain for months and months on end (:

  16. I have been enjoying Alan Titchmarsh’s TV programmes for many years. His YouTube channel is informative and enjoyable. However, I was really disappointed to read the Times article about Alan last week in which it was stated that the YouTube videos are filmed in somebody else’s garden. I had spotted that some of the videos moved between his previous home and the new location and I had no problem with that. I also have no problem with the advertising. But there is something about seeing someone developing their own garden which makes watching more intimate and enjoyable. Including the current owners in the videos occasionally would restore some reality to the channel.
