Are Expensive Food Brands Actually Worth It?

Can you really taste the difference between supermarket own-brand products and big-name brands?

In this blind taste test, Mike & Jamie try to find out whether a selection of branded products actually justify their higher price tags, or if the supermarket own-brand versions are just as good.

  1. missed the most important aspect of the premium brand. The colour is closer to white due to longer drying times at a lower heat. cheap pasta that is yellow has been dried at a higher heat in a shorter time. all the flavour and nutrients have been cooked out. there are exceptions where here in canada some of the store brands are imported from countries like portugal who follow all the same strict processes and make white pasta with bronze die machinery. ex presidents choice

  2. I default to supermarket own brands unless there's a brand I especially care about. Weetabix being an example I need branded.

  3. I'm surprised with the pasta that they weren't all extruded with a bronze die. It seems like almost all of the pastas sold in the USA are extruded from bronze dies. There's not much difference in price between a teflon extruded pasta and a bronze die extruded pasta. The price really seems to jump due to things like drying techniques.

  4. YEEEEEES! No blindfolds, midrange options, and Totally Useful Facts Even Though I Don't Live In The UK!!!!! Love it!

  5. I think you needed to stop Ben going into too much detail with the ingredients – he said that pie C was finished with rosemary salt which I'd say is a fairly major giveaway that it's going to be the premium one.

  6. Hmm gives me an idea as a developer – wonder how easy it is to scrape data here. How useful would it be to know where the food produced in the same factory is sold the cheapest

  7. This was great guys. We've been asking for this for ages! Also please highlight that gluten free ones at normal prices please

  8. For the love of god, stop showing what gonna happen, we see it when we watch the video.

  9. I've not been inside a M&S for at least 15 years, but soon asI saw that pie, it screamed to me it was one of them supermarket own brands that are made to look fancy to make you think you are getting more than you are paying for.

  10. Enjoy this series, and hate to say this, but Mike sometimes goes on too long with his comments.

  11. I'd like to see this, but skip the brand. Go the 3 levels the supermarket sells all 3 from the same supermarket ideally.

  12. The M and S chicken pie looks almost identical to Aldi's version which is cheaper than the cheapest one in the lineup.
