Sinaloa: Local Delicacies in a Pueblo Mágico | Pati’s Mexican Table S8 E6

In this episode of Pati’s Mexican Table, I’m retracing my steps. I first visited El Fuerte – one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos – years ago on a family vacation aboard El Chepe Express, the scenic train that winds through Mexico’s Copper Canyon. This time, I’m getting a walking tour packed with flavor.

At the iconic Hotel Posada Hidalgo, I try the house specialty: langoustines with garlic butter. Later, my guide Ariel won’t let me leave town without trying a beloved agua fresca that goes by “barley water,” or sometimes “pura vida.” That seems to be almost as hard to find as a sip from the fountain of youth. Good thing I stumbled upon a delicious snack, tostilocos, while he was tracking it down.

Back in my kitchen, that barley water inspires a classic horchata — irresistible and easy to make. And those El Fuerte langoustines have me dreaming of lobster two ways: saucy, messy lobster chilaquiles and my Mexican spin on the classic lobster roll.
