I’ve always loved the look of vintage checkerboard walls, but I wanted to find a way to recreate the effect myself without expensive wallpaper. In today’s makeover, I’m transforming my tiny dining room using nothing more than painter’s tape, paint, and a little patience to create a custom DIY wallpaper effect that completely changes the space.

From planning the pattern and painting every square to styling the finished room with vintage furniture, collected decor, and the final reveal, I’m taking you through the entire process step by step. If you’ve been looking for a budget-friendly wall treatment that makes a huge impact, this one might be my favorite DIY yet.

I hope this project inspires you to try something unexpected in your own home. Enjoy the makeover!

  1. It's so good. Everything looks nicely done. Like only you can. Changing the trim was a great idea. The room really stands out. Glad you did a video. I know you are busy and have a lot going on. One question? πŸ€” Did you pay for the new hardware from the shop?πŸ˜…

  2. Welcome back! So nice to see you doing a home space again. Good luck with everything.

  3. I liked the wall treatment with that strong lime green base. With the muted pink, the room looks top heavy to me now.

  4. WOW, I love love the colors, the gingham walls, fantastic and you have got a lot of patience doing all of the taping …soo sooo proud of you for the entrepreneurial life you have created for yourself.. so inspirational..

  5. I loveee how it turned out! I've been watching you for years and you still never cease to amaze me with your eye for design! β™‘

  6. Fully understanding how creepy and weird it is to be this bonded to a person I only see on the internet I am just going to say it: Drew. I love you. (This is harmless as I am a 70 year old woman who lives states away from you and I have no creepy hobbies or stalker access to you or anybody else. πŸ™‚ ) Just saying, though, you brighten my days and I just love you for it.

  7. I'm inspired to paint some stripes on my walls! :-). Thank you for coming back with the projects!

  8. Did you decide to not paint the doors? Also, where is our Winston fix? We've been lacking in those too!πŸ˜ŠπŸΎπŸ’œ

  9. I was so nervous w the wallpaper paint at first because I tend to get overwhelmed by wallpaper but you truly showed how it could work really well in a space and still include additional decor! Really beautiful transformation ❀
