So I think we may have been a target because not as many tourists were around
I will never enter a restaurant there again so very upsetting
I would say try restaurants a bit outside the typical tourist places. I was in Barcelona and was looking for a very niche store that was far away from all the typical tourist places. I found a really small tapas place, nobody that worked there spoke English and my Spanish is non-existent and only locals there. That place was really one of the highlights food wise for me.
I also recommend checking out Bib Gourmand restaurants from the Micheline Guide, you can find some really good places there.
We chose Le Rubis in the 2nd for lunch for the reasons you say. We were taken to the seating upstairs. It was filled with tourists (like us)! So I said we would like a table downstairs which they begrudgingly did. Fabulous food – chilly atmosphere – but it felt quintessentially french.
I'm sorry I have to disagree with your judgement on "fait maison". The law says that if any sort of "transformation" is done in the kitchen, they are allowed to call it "fait maison". So anything they buy "ready made" in different "pieces" or "sections" and assemble in the restaurant, they are allowed to call it "fait maison".
"fait maison" used to be an interesting criteria, but its rule has been changed and twisted enough that it doesn't really mean anything anymore today.
first hey are not tourist traps, these restaurants are intended for tourists. Just never eat in the centre of Paris. You always overpay and get bad food. second food advice from Americans ? Really 😂

This is great advice for travellers anywhere.
This is just common sense and applicable to any country with good cuisine, nothing ground breaking here. I could apply this to Rome, Florence, Venice, Lyon, or my relatives hometown of Antibes, even here in Melbourne 🇦🇺🦘
Great tips! But travelling with two picky eater kids, I fear we will still end up in the tourist traps having burger/pizza on the menu 🙈😅. Hope we will be able to enjoy 1-2 authentic meals 😊
Small menus are a good sign in any city anywhere in the world.
I'm from Paris, and I think your advice is excellent. Unfortunately people should know that it's estimated that 80% of restaurants in Paris serve industrially produced food.
If you want to avoid that, expect to pay at least €40 per person for a meal (a bit less with the "menu midi"), not including wine.

I find Paris rather frustrating because if you aren’t Parisian or at least French, it can be difficult to get into the inner circle of the better restaurants and the better meals… I had the impression that even within a restaurant better cuts of meat we’re going to the local clientele… Also, interestingly, there can be a lot of English speakers around you in a very family orientated local restaurant… You have to remember all the Europeans and New Yorkers who have been going there for decades… And no the best as well as any local. It’s an interesting conundrum… Paris.
Agree with all your red flags. Another for me is how much food is on the tables of other customers. Are people eating? Often i realise what's off is there's no actual food on the table. You suddenly realise no one is being served.
I would say, Paris on its own is a tourist trap 😉

Yep. Been there but in Porto. Gimme the off the main drag little mom & pop place where the locals go for coffee & a pastry. Lesson learned some five decades ago when I was a sailor. Basically if the clientele is mostly gringos, walk on by.

I used to work in London and often went to Paris in the weekends and agreed that a lot of tourist traps
Question-my husband and I will be in Paris soon and are looking forward to enjoying some lovely non-touristy restaurant meals. We have both have had surgeries that do not allow us to eat a lot. (Not that it matters but the surgeries were due to different medical conditions and not weight loss intentions so it is important that we don’t overeat). Is it extremely bad manners to share an appetizer, entree and dessert? There is no way we each could eat entree but really don’t want to have to explain ourselves. Thoughts? Advice? Thanks! This reminded me of a visit to Paris in 1986. I think it was an advertisement at the airport for Harry's Bar: Just tell your taxi driver, " Sank Roo Doe Noo".

We were in Chartres France.We asked for a salad and got letters and olive oil.No tomato cucumber or anything else with it.French cuisine? Strange many don't understand English until it comes to the bill.
