I headed down to Coventry Road in Birmingham to check out Salama Somali & Yemeni Restaurant, and wow… what an experience! The first thing that hits you when you walk in isn’t just the amazing smells, it’s the energy. The place was absolutely buzzing and so noisy—but in the best way possible! I had no idea Somali and Yemeni culture was this loud and boisterous, and it made the whole vibe so welcoming and alive.
As for the food? Absolutely fantastic. From the rich flavors to the massive portions, everything was a 10/10.

Coventry road has great memories and I grew up with Somali friends whose family always treated me alhamduillah
I also went to Somali / Yemeni restaurant Momos on Coventry road. I placed my order and went to the loo. I saw the biggest log ever seen. Completely put me off the food. I didnt eat my food & i never went back to eat Somali /Yemenii food. Im scarred for life.

Im from up north i moved to Birmingham 5 years ago working in the housing sector the Somalian tennants that i deal with are all on drugs they fight with other residents make noise and are very abusive and loud mouthed i have had so many issues with these people being phsically attacked 3 times in 5 years by them i have stopped housing these people so sad why are they like this i have not met a single one that has been a good person why are they like this would love to meet a kind sincere hearted somalian?? better come eat here the guy behind the counter seems polite

Bismillah TFT AM SO GLAD AND HAPPY YOU VENTURED INTO A SOMALIA FOOD SPOT.THE PASTA IS THE ITALIAN INFLUENCE FROM WAY BACK.BUT LISTEN YEMENI FOOD IS ON NEXT LEVELS. When are you stepping into a %💯 authentic yemeni food place .Ask for selta fahhsa fried meats and liver. Mandi rice zurbian and you need to try authentic hullba. Come on .MANCHESTER HAS LOADS OF YEMENI FOOD.SPOTS .YOU ARE MISSING OUT.
Can't blame you for not trying Somali food before because traditionally most Somali food joints are located in and around London. There is not much presence of Somali food establishments across North East or North West. Food looks amazing but its not pure Somali Haniid (the dish you trying) but a fusion of Middle eastern cousine and elements of Somali eatry. As per noise if its quiet without any chaos, its not Somali gaffe (in the most nicest way) 😅

If you want to experience the somali vibes and atmosphere then try visit Ar Rahma masjid in Liverpool, not for the food lol but a general visit and you'll not want to leave.

TFT you must try Yemeni food! Please find a reputable one as there are a few in Manchester and Birmingham, you will be absolutely blown away with how amazing it is.

My review & comment of Somali & Yemeni food is one most underrated & I’ve tried it at my friends home & restaurants has some of the authentic dishes such as
•Bariis iskukaris: The beloved national dish• a spiced one-pot basmati rice loaded with cloves,cardamom, cinnamon, usually served with slow-roasted meat, also with fresh banana etc.
• Suqaar – An highly comforting savoury stir-fry thinly sliced meat (Beef, goat or chicken) and combination of vegetables & bell peppers.
• Baasto iyo suugo: A Somali adaptation of Italian based Spaghetti, often served with heavy meat spicey sauce & accompanied with ripe banana.
• Sambusa or shamusa : is Indian-triangular l, savoury based stuffing of meat, mince meat & various types of vegetables etc.
• Breakfast & Breads:
Canjeero ( Laxoox ) A spongy slightly sour fermented flatbread similar to Ethiopian injera eaten with stews, honey & butter.
• Sabayaad A flaky, pan-fried flatbread ( very similar to paratha ) cooked with a slight oil.
• Muufo : Traditional cornbread baked in an oven.
•Essential Yemeni Cuisine
• Saltah : A National Dish A bubbling, piping hot brown meat stew ( beef & Lamb ) topped with hulba ( A frothy fenugreek lather ) and served with fresh flatbread.
• Mandi : Fragrant Basmati rice cooked with incredibly tender-meat ( Chicken or Lamb ) smoked over charcoal in underground tandoor.
• Fahsa: Similar to Saltah, featuring shredded meat with mixed into stew.
• Breakfast & Breads
•Lahoh: A fermented, spongy & bubbly pancake-like bread
• Malawach: A crispy Multi-layered (oftenly sprinkled with nigella seeds ) usually served with honey & cheese.
• Mutabbaq: A folded, pan fried flatbread stuffed with spiced minced meat, onions & eggs.

• Bint Al Sahn : A riches, layered honey cake, made by stacking thin pastry, dough baked & topped with nigella seeds.

Lots of great Somali places in Bristol. My experience of these places is always the same: Delicious food and friendly, generous people. I made the mistake of walking by and thinking "why are these people shouting? they don't sound very happy" but I was wrong. If you keep an open mind it's amazing the joys you will find.
