World’s best Native American fine dining restaurant reopens as Indígena by Owamni.

It was my honor to interview one of the most important artists of the 21st century, Chef Sean Sherman – whose trail blazing Native American fine dining brought representation to Indigenous culture that was destroyed by colonialism, then boarding schools. His new restaurant, Indígena by Owamni offers an expansive new menu that will represent Native culture throughout the Americas – with dishes such as Bison Bone marrow with Yucca bread. Colonial ingredients like flour, pork, and beef have been removed and replaced with sustainable ingredients native to our Midwestern environment – sourced from Native American Producers. In my interview we discuss Chef Sherman’s childhood growing up on Pine Ridge reservation – one of the poorest places in the US. As well as how even the indigenous knowledge that would have usally been passed down from generation was destroyed as his grandparents were amongst the first natives to be forcefully assimilated in boarding school, forced to cut their hair, and erase their culture – including their foods. Through research and connections with natives around the world – including a life changing experience with the Huichol community in Mexico, Sean has brought back Native cuisine in a large way with this globally historic restaurant opening at the Guthrie theater in Minneapolis.
