From township kitchen table to drive-thrus & fine dining: A couple’s spicy venture
Over a dinner table, feasting on meat – Terence Leluma’s father-in-law had prepared some relish. The year was 2012.
Leluma, being an entrepreneur, spoke to his then girlfriend, Phumzile, about improving and commercialising the relish. The outcome was the birth of Makhamisa Foods, a producer of relishes and sauces.
It was not easy though. They had to source funds. Fortunately, the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition (DTIC) was launching its Black Industrialists programme.
The DTIC injected some money into the venture. The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) also followed suit.
Makhamisa made its initial products from a small plant offered by a restauranteur friend. The funding enabled the couple to built a state-of-the-art plant in Edenvale, Johannesburg.
Big contracts came in, and Makhamisa became a well-known brand in the restaurant and fast food industry of South Africa.
