Gyudon is so easy to make and just perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. This recipe has it all: juicy, tender beef and wonderful flavor.

Ingredients (2 servings)

200 gbasmati rice
400 mlwater
300 gbeef (fillet)
2onions (red)
3green onions
3 tbspsoy sauce
3 tbspmirin
2 tbspoyster sauce
3 tbspsake
3 tbspsugar
salt

Shiraz
A fruity red wine with a light tannic presence is the ideal accompaniment here, bringing out the savory flavors of the dish.

Step 1

Gyudon

Add rice, water and a pinch of salt to a saucepan. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat and allow to cook for approx. 10 – 15 min. until done. If necessary, drain excess water.

Step 2

Meanwhile, cut beef into thin strips. Cut red onion and green onion into thin slices.

300 g beef / 2 red onions / 3 green onions

Step 3

Add red onion, soy sauce, mirin, oyster sauce, sake, and sugar to a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat and continue to cook for approx. 2 – 3 min.

Step 4

Gyudon

Then, add beef strips to saucepan and stir to cover with sauce.

Turn off heat, cover with aluminum foil, and allow to stew until meat is tender, approx. 3 – 4 min.

Remove aluminum foil and garnish with green onions. Serve over rice.
