THE OLD WOMAN WINTER
Running, as if from a disaster,
They came in droves to the coast
Two boys
Smarter,
To give news
To their wives
That they saw on the hill at the sheepfold,
Descending from the mountaintop,
Over unbridged waters,
The gray and old winter…
Later, later in the evening,
The old woman also entered the village:
Look at her at the top of the bridge,
In full view of the people,
On a dry log,
With a fur coat to wear,
With a fur coat to steal,
With a hat to wear
Let the wind pass through her!
And as it blows in cold fists,
It blows the mist out on the paths,
And on the valley bottoms it breaks
Purple mists, of fluff…
And the little boys came out,
Small and many
And barefoot,
And a few older
With whips and sticks
And with thin slingshots,
To drive away
Winter with evil thoughts from here…
The old lady of frost,
She rose from the ground.
And raising a hand to the sky,
Like a dry balance
Of a well.
She set off down the wind,
Frowning,
Cursing,
She left behind her
Frost and sleet;
In the fields,
Crows and ravens
Through the forests,
Gray wolves,
And along the road
Only the wisps of smoke…
