Make Your Own: Colored Sugar

Learn how to make your own colored decorating sugar! There are only 2 ingredients you most likely already have in your pantry. Doing it this way is not only more economical but also has unlimited color possibilities!

What you’ll need:
1/4 cup white sugar
40 drops liquid food coloring

Put your sugar into a jar with tight fitting lid and ad 10 drops of food coloring. Put the lid on and shake vigorously until food coloring is dispersed evenly. Add 10 more drops of food coloring and shake vigorously again. Spread out onto a plate and let dry for a few hours. Break up clumps with a fork or back of a spoon and repeat the coloring process again adding 10 drops of food coloring at a time for a total of 40 drops. Again, spread out onto a plate to dry for a few hours. Break up with a for or back of a spoon and store in a zip top bag or airtight container. Done!

I found if you add all 40 drops of food coloring at once, the sugar becomes a solid ball of sugar and the food coloring doesn’t mix in very well. I also tried using gel food coloring and it didn’t color the sugar at all, breaking the gel into tiny bits. Using a fork to mix it in broke the sugar crystals into a powder which is not the effect I was going for.
