NYC’s New Hit Sandwich Is an Indian-ish Sensation | Sandwich City | NYT Cooking

On a tucked-away side street in the West Village is Fonty’s Deli + Dukaan, a nascent spot that has drawn lines down the block for its “Indian-ish” sandwiches.

Of all the sandwiches at Fonty’s, none have taken off quite like the Naanini — a panini-style creation pressed between freshly baked naan and filled with options like chicken tikka, Kerala beef or chana masala, plus toppings such as cheese and pickled onions.

For the co-owners Viraj Borker, Varsha Harlalka and Arjun Gupta, the sandwiches at Fonty’s aren’t gimmicks, they’re a point of connection — blending cultures, flavors and backgrounds into something that reflects the American immigrant experience in a familiar, beloved form.

  1. What a sweet and intelligent chef! I wish I could try one of these. I’ll have to look around and try some local Indian joints around me so I can try these flavors

  2. He's the Pune boy who got to become a chef, and here I am, a Pune boy who wanted to become one, but ended up becoming a corporate lawyer (don't regret it tho 😂, just a lil wistful)

  3. so much plastic. tomato sauce comes in a plastic bag. so i asume all the sauce is contaminated with microplastic. the sandwich is wrapped in aluminium foil and then cut in half. I wonder how many aluminium particles get into the sandwich that way. it might taste good but I wouldn‘t want all the „secret ingrédients „

  4. Madhur Jaffrey should be here and you could recreate the ‘Nani’ video with the Naanini playing a major role.

  5. May be I'm too harsh but naanini is a horrible name. It resembles too close to naani which is the hindi word for maternal grandmother so this absolutely confuses me. All the best with the venture though.

  6. It's a quesadilla made with naan flat bread instead of a tortilla 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, everything looks absolutely delicious 😋

  7. All of the viral food trends are learned about on TikTok now. What happened to learning about this stuff on Eater or Grub Street? Stupid paywalls. Also, I notice that many trendy restaurants these days (Semma, Salt Hank's, Mama's Too, Ceres pizza) are popping up in the West Village rather than the East Village/LES – why is this? In the late 2000s and 2010s it was the LES that was poppin'. I guess they still have Double Chicken Please.

  8. As a fellow desi, I'm proud of the innovative Indian chefs in NYC at all these different restaurants putting Indian food on the map. Wishing their new business continued success.
