  1. This place felt like a real institution — honestly a once in a lifetime experience for us.

Have you ever been here? Would you go?

And are there any places like this near you that we should try in the future? 👇

  2. Hoppin John is traditionally a dish we Southerners eat on New Year’s (even though I eat black-eyed peas, no rice). It usually is served with collard greens. Eating this meal on January 1st will bring prosperity during the upcoming year. The peas represent pennies and the greens, dollar bills.

  3. ugh hate sweet tea. just tea lemon and ice. and hate sweet corn bread, yuck . jalapeño corn bread yes.

  4. I went there a couple weeks ago and it was awful. The food tasted like hospital food and half of us got food poisoning.

  5. WOW…….I will take Andrews chicken ,,,Andrews tomato pie with Nicolas Mac n cheese and fried green tomatoes and the banana pudding please 🙂 Thank you

  6. I am a Black woman and I live in Atlanta. I am so sorry you didn't go to Mary Mac's in their hey day. If you haven't had Southern food before, this is not the best place for your first time. I last went there a year ago and the food was terrible. I used to drink a whole galleon of iced tea on my own. The last time I went I didn't even finish one glass. They used to have a line down the block of people trying to get in. As you can see the place is half empty and I don't see any Black people in there. If you don't see Black people in a place, then the food isn't that good. If you aren't a Black Southern, you will think this is a good representation of Southern food. It is not.

  7. Oh my goodness. That looks so yummy. I’d have to mix that tomato pie with that hopping john. I love a bit of stewed tomato with my blackeye peas. So with rice as well. Yumm.

  8. Sorry, I have to split my vote. I think Andrew got the best entree (chicken fried chicken) and Nicola got the best sides (mac & cheese and fried green tomatoes).

  9. Sorry you had to experiene Southern food at Mary Mac's. It may have been good at one time, but it hasn't been good for many years.

  10. With that much bread on the table I didn't know how she made it to the main course😂. They only gave you two green fried tomatoes? 😢 I have never had hoppin John's are tomato pie. I'm choosing the chicken fried chicken dish because I would love to choose hoppin John's and tomato pie.

  11. MM’s potlikker is fabulous but I always want more greens before I leave there. I love the chicken but I’m hoping to try the catfish – and the tomato pie – the next time I’m in town.
N.b. Your desserts really are practically ubiquitous in the south.

  12. Please have your thyroid physically checked by a physician ma’am. Glad you enjoyed good ol’ Southern cooking’. 😊

  13. `1. Pot likker is the juice from a pot of cooked turnip, mustar or collard greens. It's water, pork and greens. Add a dash of vinear to bring out the flavor. 2. Cornbread in the South is NEVER sweet. It is, however, greasey. 3. The other bead is yeast roll. 4. Tea in the South is weet tea over ice (Northern US is hot or cold with no sugar). Milk in tea of any kind is a nasty travesty. 5. Hoppin' john is a mix of rice with beans, although this is blavk-eyed peas cooked with pork. Lots of other ingredients are possible depending on the region. 6. Mac & cheese – never had it and don't like it. 6. Fried green tomatoes are prepaed wih unripe tomatos, possibley dipped in buttermilk, then in breadcrumbs and fried in bacon grease. 7.Tomato pie – mostly tomato and cheese. Never seen it like that.. 8. Chicken fried chicken – chicken brast is breaded and deep fat fried, then topped with a cream gravy with lots of pepper. 9. Put some vanilla ice cream on your peach cobblar to go into orbit.
