I’m putting Australia’s favourite food to the test with a proper meat pie session at Angelwood pies in Perth WA

In this episode, I get hands on in the bakery making two unreal pies: a custom steak, cheese and jalapeño pie packed with chunky beef, gravy, melted Tasmanian cheddar and jalapeño relish, plus a chicken parmigiana pie loaded with chicken thigh, ham, tomato sauce, mozzarella and a crispy crumbed top.

We go through the pastry, build the fillings, get them in the oven, then cut them open for the real test. Plenty of gravy, flaky pastry, big flavour and a proper debate around what makes an elite Aussie meat pie.

  4. Bro I had to go 4 hours out of Sydney last week and bought my first steak, jalapeño and cheese pie. It was unreal, it wasn’t a relish though. I had to go back and buy 5 more cold ones to bring back to Sydney lol

  5. Pulled up at Lakes Road Caltex in Nambeelup on Thursday to grab a pie, they do a mean pie in there I was getting out, I noticed a familiar face heading off with three mates into a blacked‑out SUV.

    Walked inside and confirmed with the server, “Was that Alex Volkanovski just in here?”

    She goes, “Yep — that’s the second time he’s been in today. Just comes in to eat the meat pies with his mates.” Even champions know where the good pies are.

  6. Ive tried a few "nz" pies and they are nothing special, classic NZ claiming to be better than Aus in some random way to try and feel better about themselves, their small man syndrome is quite sad.

  8. Amazing looking pies! Deffinitely need to do something with the excess fat. You should freeze it may save it soute in some vegies or even lather it over a brisket and make a pie out of it.
