As someone that has worked at the back of the house… you dont want to hear what the chef and cooks think about "people that think this is their home"…i left bc as you can imagine… not very nice to work there.
I work at a super busy burrito joint with a subway-style build your own process thats super vulnerable to cross contamination. Whenever anyone has allergies, gluten intolerance, or any such condition we always take the time to pull from fresh, unopenned containers in the BoH for them. Our food tastes great, everyone should be able to enjoy it without any fear!
I think these are very reasonable requests, but when it comes to allergies, please let the restaurant know of all your allergies when making the reservation, because it will be much easier to accommodate during prep.
I think, in NY at least, they're legally required to assist physical disabilities. I forget if there's any limitations, but I remember one guy getting spoon fed by servers year back because his tremors were so bad that day he was struggling.
Sarah no one gives a shit. If you have rules about posting comments to not hurt your feelings or ask questions, don’t be on a public platform.
And if your friend has that many allergies, then don’t go out to eat. Crazy to think others would risk their restaurant over à missed allergen in her meal.
I think if the restaurant really can't accomodate someone, they need to just say it. If all your pots and pans are coated in peanut oil, just apologise and ask the customer to leave because it is NOT safe.
Cutting the food no biggie but the allergies I wouldn’t trust any restaurants to not accidentally kill me. I won’t even eat out as a vegan because of cross contamination. There is one restaurant near my work that has a separate allergy kitchen for celiac snd egg snd dairy allergies so the vegan food comes from that kitchen. I have eaten there a couple of times but it’s breakfast and lunch only and it’s very expensive. Trader Joe’s is across the street. Easier and cheaper to buy some ingredients and make the food yourself.
You're not a restaurants worst nightmare. My personal, and many chefs, least favorite are the ones that lie about allergies. Especially considering the lengths we have to go to make everything allergen safe. Like damn if you don't like eggs just say that, don't lie about an allergy then ask me for extra damn mayonnaise and say it's fine after 2 servers and a manager say it has eggs in it
I have the same kind of allergy card!! 😀
Love the NO ADVICE PLEASE. There should automatically be a switch for that option
That's wild. As a former cook (sous chef and fast food both) these requests are not only reasonable but having things like the allergy card and knowing beforehand helps us in the back way more than something vague or said after the food is already out. The only time I'd decline is knowing that I can't prevent cross contamination like at the fast food places.
Yesterday I found a Italian restaurant that had gluten free pasta, I mean real good pasta not chewy or falling apart. And the food was delicious. I’m not really comfortable with going to new places because of my food allergies
only go to places where the staff is nice to you, don't go to places where they're not
what do you mean you said "no advice please"?
I think a place saying you should go elsewhere is mean yes but it’s better then them accidentally causing you an allergy problem
I've worked as a waitress before, and honestly cutting someone's food for them seems like a really pretty simple and reasonable thing to accommodate, even in a busy kitchen. It's surprising people have given you a hard time about this!
Facts. That’s exactly why servers are getting tipped the 22%+ per table, because they need to accommodate to guests.
And there's me in my bumfuck nowhere trying to find a restaurant with adequate vegetarian menu:
So unfortunate these two are considered a worst nightmare for resturants. Yes you have ever right to go out and enjoy a meal. Accommodations should be made. A nightmare customer to me is someone who is disrespectful, rude, or making the job impossible to do. Glad you all are sharing this!
I’d just like to say that with the allergy thing, it’s not even just about them caring about your life… like if anything for the most part they’re just service workers like they don’t make that much money and they can’t really afford to miss out on 2 to 3 weeks of pay trying to find a new job. It’s typically wayyyyy more about their job, wellbeing, and financial stability so if anything happens to you, they WILL lose their job. Companies will do just about anything to prevent a lawsuit against themselves. If they fire the person who took your order, then it’s now a better look for them from a legal standpoint. Even if you only complain or you just get an itchy throat or something like that management does not care because to them employees are expendable. They will get fired and they care much more about their job than they do your $35 worth of service.
I would much rather have a restaurant tell me they cannot accommodate my allergies than fumble their way through and poison me
That is so stupid how long does it take them to just cut the food 🙄🙄🙄
I have a ton of food allergies too. I love how many restaurants in UK/Europe have allergy lists in the menus, and they list more than the most common 3 allergies. Guests have to ask fewer questions and can make easier requests when information is written clearly for them!
??? im so confused why a server would be mad over you ordering your food cut, like first of all it doesn’t affect them at all, the chefs would be cutting it….second it takes maybe 5 extra seconds to do? some people should not be working in the service industry if they don’t know how to provide good service!!
Not all dexterity issues or disabilities are viable but cutting did if needed can make a big difference to a persons dining experience. Thr fiid allergy Ont I can understand that with limited space in a prep area it might not always be possible.
Anyone who refuses to take a few minutes to cut up the food of someone who has mobility issues in their hands is not a very good person
I'm a cook and just last week I had a server ring in "22oz Ribeye – Split, Both cut up" and the server was like "sorry sorry, one of the guys only had one arm, the other guy has one eye, so they just said cut the whole thing up" I told em "no don't apologize I'm all about accessibility" 😂
The first girl, I hope theyre only rude to you because the restaurant is busy, the server is young and inexperienced or overwhelmed, and your request put them on the backfoot at their worst moment.
For the second girl, I hope theyre only telling you we can’t serve you because they know their back staff is going to mess it up somehow.
None of these are good excuses by the way, or appropriate. just the most understandable. I have to hope for the best ya know 😰
