  1. Most of these were popular in the 70s too because I grew up with several of them. Chicken Divan goes back even farther because I swear Peg Bracken had a recipe for it in her 'I Hate to Cook' book. As to Sloppy Joes, was my family the only one who put mayo on each bun and filling on each bun, eating them open-faced with a fork?

  2. My favorite combination is Worcestershire sauce lemon juice and sugar. Just enough sugar to offset the tartness of the lemon juice. I use it in sloppy joes, chili, nachos, coneys, and even sausage gravy.

  3. Easiest, fastest way to marinade… vacuum seal!! When you suck the air out it opens the pores, then when you release the vacuum it sucks the marinade deep inside the meat– instantly! You can use a zip lock baggie ( cut a small x and put a piece of electrical tape loosely over the hole.)
Or use a jar with a pin hole in the lid. If you want the vacuum to hold longer than a second cover the hole loosely with tape before pumping but it's not necessary. It's already done
You can get a small hand held vacuum pump for a couple dollars.
    Ziplock sells one.

  4. In my most countryfied accent, Its shake and bake and I helped.
And I'm from South Mississippi so its said with a real southern draw.

  5. I'm confused. Do people not eat this anymore? Because I do, and I think a lot of my mom coworkers still do too… I've got several packs of Shake-n-Bake and Manwich in my pantry.

  6. My mom made similar taco salad but with four major differences: tortilla chips, a vinaigrette, and cold browned beef and kidney beans. That version remains one of my least favorite meals. The rest of my family loves it.

  7. I worked at Wendy’s in ‘83-‘84 at a store that tried out new products on the menu. We introduced taco salad – but without that cute bowl. Apple dumplings and baked potatoes were others they tested there too. Nice to know the potatoes stuck around.

  8. I’m 81 and I can tell you that most of these meals have been in our menus in same way or another. My mother had a cafe and feature a daily special. She bought it in her 40’s . She was from south Texas and prepared her meals like she was feeding her family. She was an amazing cook..
