Not like this. The chef at the restaurant I worked at would have inspected the past date food first to make sure it hasn't spoiled yet and then ran them as a special
It really depends on the place for expired food items. Worked at Target for over 12 years. There were so many expired products on the shelves. Even if it was 1 day past we threw it out. Highly recommend looking at dates if and when you shop at Target
As someone who did Food Safety compliance for a major grocery chain, I know it costs money to toss but it should not be sold for public consumption, in a restaurant or store. If you want to eat something like that at home, it’s your choice. Also don’t change dates! 🙄😆
Also, if it says "use by" or "expires on" then yeah, you'd be better off throwing it out after that date but if it says "best before" that's just a suggestion and it's still safe to eat
Ha! Thats nothing. I used to work in an all you can eat grill and we were forced to cook rotten meat. We washed them woth some bleach. Then added spices. Nobody notice it and it was working there or the streets.
No. Never heard that. And I'm glad I didn't. I'd have freaked the heck out. I've had chicken in date that was off, occasionally. Ground chicken is it's own fresh nightmare.
You can eat "expired" food, but it depends on how it was stored. If it was cooled properly the whole time, no problem. But it's still a massive health code violation.
Expiration date always has some buffer. As long as colour and smell are not suspicious in any way it should be fine. The real problem starts when they start to cut off mold or wash marinate smelly meat in spices to hide the smell
Also some restaurants set their own stricter expiration dates… i.e., Chipotle…. Many things would be considered expired… However if you were to look at the actual packaging the food came in it would give you a date further out
The reverse is also true…. Sometimes food goes bad before the expiration date
Best practice is to just check the food for signs that it has gone bad and use the expiration date as a guideline…… Things past their expiration date are probably expired and should be tossed
Not a little bit where the chef told the like cook to modify the expiration date is shady af
The chef may not be in the wrong here. Expiration dates for most products are largely corporate decisions in the US, not legal regulations. Depending on the local laws, the chef may or may not be breaking local food regulations.
Well if they've been frozen I don't see much issue. Now if they've been in the fridge and are starting to smell toss it out. Then again, restaurants probably have some more strict guidelines, but even then some "expired" food can get out to the customer.
Its funny how people are freaking out about food safety but obviously have never worked in the industry. Its not about safety; Its about money.
I worked at a distributor for a while picking orders. For a year I was picking off a pallet of marshmallows to sell to a drug store. One day, I noticed one of the boxes was open. The marshmallows were hard as a rock. I looked at the expiration date. Expired 2 years ago. So I tell the boss and he basically says "Fuck! Why did you have to say it? We know, obviously… I guess now we have to do something about it. Thanks asshole." I felt like it was wrong to sell expired stuff to a fucking drug store. So next day who do they sell the entire pallet of marshmallows to for a huge discount? That same drug mart. They ALSO knew they were expired and did not care one bit.
We also had lots of cheese. What do we do with the expired cheese? Mold everywhere? Throw it out? Nope. We sold it at a discount to one particular restaurant that I will never visit.
If you buy something that is on sale at walmart or something, its about to expire or already expired. Why do you think it's on sale in the first place?
By that narrow a margin? Probably a lot of places would. Especially if that's a sell by date, not a use by date. If it's sell by, then they are fine and will be for a few more days. Not 10 days, but that day and the next should be no issue. If use by, that's more problematic, the chef's pushing a line he really shouldn't be, but it's probably still fine. Not by much, though, and he's gonna roll snake eyes if he keeps doing it.
Lil while back i was going through desperate times, ended up eating old chocolate and pringles 2-4 years past the best before date and they were fine, crisps were perfect and the choc just lost some of the taste, packaging now days is so good that a lot of these dates on less critical foods is mostly there so that shops can turn stock easier
Meat can go bad before the expiration date and me.Can be good after expiration date. You have to take a look at those. And smell them before you take them out to sell them.
So long as you accept responsibility for anything happening this typically "okay". The food doesn't magically to bad the second the clock strikes 12:01.

1 day expired is fine, as long as the restaurant accepts that they are completely at fault if a consumer gets poisoned
Chicken is at the top of my list of things im not okay with this though.
Food is either marked with "best before" OR "do not consume after" dates. Chicken falls squarely into the latter for very good reason.
Sell by date, not an expiration
Those parties probably have like 4-5 days before they actually rot
Bette than food waste
In healthcare, when there is a national shortage, most medications will get an expiration date extension. It's safe.
No sniff test? Then going around asking other people to smell it to confirm? Lol
Happens all the time. Easily noticeable when servers try to push a certain dish on you 😂
It’s one day old chicken, I won’t be upset if you made it for me on the menu.

That’s why you never eat Monday and Tuesdays ‘specials’
Yes it happened alot. Have had many food jobs from delis, fast food, to regular restaurants. They all did it.
Food is good until it rots or smells off
This is normal actually.
One day after expiry is actually very safe to eat. That is all come down to personal judgement.
One day? No big deal.
Smell the stuff, nose is a good help.
Any smell, NO, odor fine OK.
Expiration dates are estimates and mostly BS. If it doesn’t look, smell or taste off, it’s fine.
Also, if it says "use by" or "expires on" then yeah, you'd be better off throwing it out after that date but if it says "best before" that's just a suggestion and it's still safe to eat
There's a big case going on in my country because they found out they were doing this in local KFCs 🥲
Ha! Thats nothing. I used to work in an all you can eat grill and we were forced to cook rotten meat. We washed them woth some bleach. Then added spices. Nobody notice it and it was working there or the streets.
In German, we call it 'Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatum' (minimum durability date) for a reason, it's still very much enjoyable after it crosses that date
No. Never heard that. And I'm glad I didn't. I'd have freaked the heck out. I've had chicken in date that was off, occasionally. Ground chicken is it's own fresh nightmare.
I work in the kitchen it does happen even months after expiration especially if its frozen product.

1-2 days is usually fine. More than that and its trouble.
Inspect the patties for signs they have gone bad

Expiry dates are really just a suggestion anyway. Why premade chicken patties though?
Usually stuff like that they'll use in the "soup of the day" or repurpose it a different way.
The reverse is also true…. Sometimes food goes bad before the expiration date

If it's frozen, it'll last at least another year and be safe to eat if it's cooked right. It just won't taste as good.
The chef may not be in the wrong here. Expiration dates for most products are largely corporate decisions in the US, not legal regulations. Depending on the local laws, the chef may or may not be breaking local food regulations.

Yeah I'm not eating at your restaurant, chef. You're a shrewd businessman, but no thanks!😂

Learn the differences between "use by", "sell by" & " best before"….HUGE differences

Preston's clueless expression in the end lol.
I'll take my chances on a day-old chicken. If it's a week old then probably not
