To be honest, Chinese snacks had improved so much since 2008 Melamine milk powder scandal in China. They actually have some really, really nice snacks, but even as a Chinese, they just have so many weird stuff that it doesn't make sense to me. Probably because I never grew up eating them.
Either ways, they have some really nice stuff, like their version of beef jerky is actually really good, but you gotta eat the spicy versions, which can be really spicy for some people.
As for the Hawthorn, i'm quite sure it's like a lollipop or Jawbreaker, you gotta suck on it, not chew it. It's just not made of pure sugar, but from the hawthorn fruit and with sugar too.
Watching this video tells me that American taste buds are just made for sweet stuff. Because most Chinese snacks, or even asian snacks are salty or spicy or a mix of both. There's also sweet snacks, but not as sweet as american snacks.
