The Noble Art of NYC Restaurant Signs | NYT Cooking

Restaurant signs are ubiquitous across New York City, but who’s behind all the iconic lettering? What does it take to design and install something that’s often a customer’s first impression of a business?

Meet the artists behind Noble Signs, a Brooklyn-based design studio that specializes in custom hand-painted and neon signs for restaurants all over New York, from mom-and-pop shops to some of the buzziest new joints. Noble Signs is also preserving and rescuing classic signage from shuttering businesses amid a rapidly changing city.

What makes a good sign? In our latest documentary, we dive into the world of restaurant signmaking, an integral part of the visual language of New York City.

  1. in the UK ‘smart clothes’ is just a term for suits or anything formal.. it’s used commonly.

  2. This is why I love New York. True artists. I will never look at a sign the same way again. ….

  3. Kareem just published an episode of Keep the meter running where the taxi driver is a sign designer by profession. The fragile NY spirit has survived in these signs

  4. I love stories like this. Preserving history and a trade. And "weirdos" make the world a better place. ❤

  5. This video just made me realise how important signage design is to me and how much I judge businesses for having horrible designs 😂

  6. There is no other feeling in the world than watching a friend or client see the piece you deigned for them for the first time. It's magical. XO

  7. the vocal fry in this voice over is SO ANNOYING — i got to 00:13 before i had to jump away — NO MORE VOCAL FRY

  8. damn this is all so beautiful, I wish business signage around here had signs like the ones they make! the idea of a museum for signs is also so cool

  9. saw Kisa on a Korean Variety show called "Krazy Rich Koreans", so cool to see them featured here too! <3 it meant so much to Koreans that the sign was in only Korean, and was seen as a huge deal to the hosts of the show / audience. c: cool to see a bit more of the behind of that.

  10. This seems like a cool job.. how does one get a job here; because I have some experience in branding and packaging design 😊❤👌✨
