Budget Steak Battle: Chef (Cheap) vs Normal (Expensive) | Sorted Food

Today, Chef Ben has to prove that skill beats spending. Armed with nothing but a cheap rump steak and years of professional experience, he’ll try to turn a budget cut into something exceptional. Meanwhile, home cook Jamie gets a premium steak, hoping quality alone will do the hard work. Is it worth paying more, or can great technique make a cheaper cut just as delicious? Let’s find out.

  1. On a channel like sortedfood where you have all the gadgets you could possibly think of why didn't Jamie have a temperature probe in the steak while it was cooking? You can set those to a certain temp and get an alert on your phone when the temp is reached. I got one for my dad close to a decade ago and he hasn't overcooked any meat since.

  2. With food prices continually going up. Maybe make this a on going series were you take a good cheap cut of meat and show us how to easily/quickly turn it into something fantastic.

  3. GO! Ben starts stabbing steak with a fork. Mike any pent up issues there Ben. My brain working with Barry as his mentor

  4. 🎉 well done. Totally enjoyed the not chaotic competition. Learning the "pros" from both cooks!
Now a pass it on doing a steak theme, and the noodle stuff Ben was making.
since the 3 of you have learned something here together 🎉

  5. Why does UK beef have absolutely 0 marbling? It all looks so sad. Great choice with the chimay grand reserve though.

  6. if you were all in school together, was the chef this "superior" in school? and how many times was he beaten up?

  7. That's ok Jamie I don't like Rare or Med Rare meat of any type, I asked for Roo to be cooked medium and that was refused so I said I'll have anything else instead please.

  8. I don't eat beef but I will be trying those sides for myself. Spaf's tomato and sardine looked amazing…so did those noodles? dumplings? that Ebbers made. I'll give them try as well.

  9. Do you think fhe boys could do a riff on contraversial dishes like pineapple on pizza? And does fruit belong in savoury and can a veg find its way into a dessert?

  10. AHHH I am so excited that the low budget chef & expensive normal format is back!!! I absolutely LOVE the $10 per chef, unlimited normal budget battles, so this is very great to see! And well done lads!

  11. I would love to see this done again. I want to see Mike and Kush cause of the chaotic energy. I want to see Baz and James do it for the posh energy.

  12. I am so sick and tired of people acting like a steak cooked more than medium rare is tough and ruined. I cook myself a filet once a week and it has the lightest pink in the center. I cut it with a fork and it practically melts in my mouth. I’ve eaten medium rare and it’s more chewy. If that’s what you like that’s fine but let’s stop acting like anymore than medium rare is bad

  13. aren’t rump steaks pretty cheap anyways even when buying the expensive one? at least it’s cheap in the usa. i was hoping you guys did a ribeye for this.

  14. I'm so glad Sorted have returned to cooking battles. These cheap v expensive ones are great for those of us on budgets

  15. I commented at 5:11 but now, if think Jamie just didn't respect the quality of the steak even though ot was a rump. Great cid though.

  16. Couple of things I noticed.
    1. Ben did the same thing the normals often do with mayo. Used technology when he should have done it by hand the first time 😂
    2. I don't know if rump is categorized differently in the UK, but in the U.S. we consider that a pretty rough cut, even if from a higher end cattle. Jamie would probably still have wanted to tenderize or marinate it.

  17. much prefer the cook on Jamie's steak. They always cook their steaks nearly blue. It was nice to see someone actually properly fully cook a steak for once

  18. You know in Chinese cooking they use bicarb to break down the fibers of beef for stir fry ? Would it help in a whole steak ? I've always wondered but can't bring myself to potentially ruin a £10 steak in trying.

  19. Would be great to see the team try different regions of cuisine. Love Asia and Europe but would love to see an exploration of Caribbean culture, beyond just Jamaica. In recipes and other guest chefs.

  20. Note to self: Do not watch these videos if you are planning to skip dinner (to lose weight)! Oh well, there's still tomorrow.

  21. Long time sorted fan here. I do love seeing you guys in the kitchen, having fun , and explaining your craft. I know you got your new challenges and reviews that are also engaging and informative, but it's something about you boys bantering in the kitchen that truly brings back the nostalgia for me. Hope to see more of this format soon. Thx!

  22. 1 – Great job Jamie and Ben, both amazing dishes
2 – I am stealing the tomato bit too, even if I know my family will remove the fish
3 – I miss the "like a chef" videos from so long ago, where Ben just taught how to do things at home that elevate a bit
4 – How though, after what 15 years, are we still not seeing Sorted over 20K likes on day one?

  23. Both steaks look cheap to me, there is no marbling at all lol. That is why I would never use rump as a steak, only roast or stew. For the most part the only cuts I use for steak are sirloin, ribeye, T-bone, fillet, and strip.
