24 Hour Pakistani Street Food Tour | Epic Food Journeys with Mark Wiens | National Geographic
Lahore is the undisputed food capital of Pakistan and Mark Wiens is ready to spend 24-hours taking it all in. Lahoris don’t just love food, they’re obsessed with it. From the chaos of Old Lahore to street grills and mango stalls packed with locals looking for a delicious respite from the heat, Mark encounters a city where food is fiery, portions are big, and passions run deep.
Beginning his Pakistani food journey at 4:30 AM, Mark travels to Haneef Siri Paye, a Lahore breakfast institution, known for paye, a dish consisting of braised goat feet served with freshly baked bread.
From there, Mark meets with Adil Lahorei, a passionate food lover and tour guide, to discover Old Lahore. They consume the famous Lahore street food snacks like Laohrei fruit chaat, which is made of bananas, apples, and apriciot sauce seasoned with masala, and dahi bhally, lentil fritters, potatoes, and yogurt seasoned with masala and chili.
Traveling on a colorful truck, Mark heads to the next spot, a famous pitstop designed restaurant at the Haji Usman Khan Hotel. There, he eats mutton rosh, slow cooked mutton, dal maash, yellow lentils stewed with black pepper and green chili, and Kabuli pulao — fluffy rice, cooked with sweet carrots and bone marrow.
Continuing the trek through Lahore, Mark goes to Butt Karahi, a restaurant best known for the dish incorporated in its name, karahi (a rounded cooking pan) of fresh rooster simmered in with cream, butter, a variety of spices, and lots of green chilies and ginger.
Dairy is a huge part of the Punjab culture and Fazal Milk and Lassi Shop is famous for their Pairoo Wali Lassi, a massive cup of yogurt and cream, hand blended with milk fudge and topped with delicious butter balls.
With the day winding down, Mark tries takatak, one of the great Pakistani street foods that is named for the rhythmic clanking of the iron spatulas on the iron griddle. Then, at the Al Riaz Cafe, Mark chooses his won goat organs and passes them to the chef so they can mask everything up and season with spices and green chiles.
Looking for a cooling snack to survive a hot evening in Lahore, Mark goes to Heera Thandhe Amm to enjoy the prized chaunsa mangos cooled in an ice bath.
For late night Pakistani street food in Lahore, there are few things better than Ilyas Dumba Karahi (Truckaa Wala Adda). Mark meets up with longtime friend and food lover Ali Naqi Hamdani, to eat mutton karahi — big chunks of fresh mutton cooked in a karahi over open fires with green chilies and black pepper.
Throughout the course of 24-hours, Mark Wiens has seen that Lahore is a city where you can eat like a king!

The food looks delicious and the street food scene seems really vibrant. The flavors must be incredible. That said, I do think hygiene standards could be improved in some spots, just something that would make the experience even better.
One thing I also noticed: all of the diners shown were men. Are women not allowed in restaurants?
Still dreaming about those karahi's!
