How to Make Buttermilk Biscuits – from scratch



This recipe is actually a clone recipe by Gloria Pitzer for Cracker Barrel biscuits but they are not at all like them. They are very good as they are and has become my staple go-to biscuit recipe.

Buttermilk Biscuits:
2 cups AP flour
1 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/8 tsp baking soda

Stir the baking soda into the buttermilk and set aside.
In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Cut in the shortening. Add in the buttermilk mixture and stir just until together. Pat out dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/2″ thick and cut into rounds. Place on a baking sheet with sides touching.
Bake for 10 minutes at 425*. Immediately brush tops with butter or margarine when they come out. Makes 10 biscuits.
