Our Most Popular Shrimp Recipe of All Time | Sue Li | NYT Cooking

Sue Li’s five-star lemony shrimp and bean stew is one of our most popular recipes of all time. It has over 22,000 ratings. One standout is a couplet from a cook who writes, “I’m going to be real, I eat this whole thing in one meal.” High praise, poetically put.

The rhyme rings true: Sue’s recipe is quick to make and a delight to eat. In a velvety mix of white beans simmered with browned leeks and plump, tender shrimp, she pairs smoked paprika with lemon juice for a bright and earthy edge. She says it serves four but, let’s be real, that’s just a suggestion.

  1. I'm not sure why anyone would want a substitute for leeks, because they aren't particularly expensive or hard to find. I suppose a mix of onion and cabbage would get you kind of close though. Onion for the allium flavor, and cabbage mostly just for texture. I'd recommend savoy cabbage, but I doubt you'll be able to find that if you can't even get leeks.

  2. Holy shit, man…I am not looking for a dumb sitcom.. just present the recipe in a professional way. "Oh look at me–I am so quirky!!"

  3. looks lovely, but it's confusing that she hasn't made/eaten this dish since 2019 if it's so good…

  4. I've made this and it is indeed a keeper! Sue just reminded me of of it and I have shrimp in the freezer. Great meal when you don't want to turn the oven on.

  5. This looks wonderful! Leeks are great, but they're a bit of a pain because they have to be so carefully cleaned in order to avoid grittiness. I keep green onions as well as shallots on hand so I'll use those instead.

  6. Can I just say thank you, Sue Li, for shutting the water off while swishing, and pouring it out of the bowl, with the leeks? It’s such a pet peeve of mine to witness people letting the water from the sink faucet run in the background, while they’re not even actively using it in that specific moment. ☮️💧🙏🏽

  7. I love your recipes! Your cabbage rolls with pork and rice were easy and delicious and was comforting to the soul!

  8. I love that she admits she hasn't made her own recipe in 7 years! I guess developing a recipe can make you a bit tired of it?
