Chef Timothy John Smith, Jr. was a devoted husband, proud father, loving son, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend whose passion, determination, and generous spirit touched countless lives. Tim’s story was one of hard work, perseverance, and unwavering love for his family. Beginning his culinary career as a line cook in Edwardsville, Illinois, he dedicated himself to mastering his craft and steadily worked his way up through the culinary world. Through talent, commitment, and countless hours of hard work, he achieved his dream of becoming Executive Chef at Hideaway Beach Club – a place he called home with people that he considered family. Every step of his journey was driven by his desire to create a better life for his beloved wife, Grace, and their daughter, Elisa, whom he loved beyond measure and was immensely proud of. Cooking was more than a profession for Tim. It was his passion, his art, and a way of bringing people together. He took great pride in mentoring young chefs, encouraging them to believe in themselves, pursue excellence, and grow in their career. His influence lives on in the many culinary professionals whose lives and careers he helped shape. While Tim took great pride in his professional accomplishments, his greatest joy came from his daughter, Elisa as well as his many nieces and nephews. Elisa is currently studying at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Whether sharing meals, laughter, adventures, or simply enjoying time together, being “Uncle Tim” was one of the roles he also treasured most. Tim is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Grace Magno-Smith; his cherished daughter, Elisa Christine Smith; his parents, Christine and Frank Brandon of Kinmundy IL and Freddy and Elisa Magno of Manila; his sisters, Brandi (Mike) Ortt of O’Fallon, Genevive Magno of Naples, FL, Genecelle (Ryan) Vergara of Manila; and his brother, Jacob Brandon of Salem, Illinois. Tim is also survived by Grandfather Ruel D Hooper and Grandmother Rosetta Brandon both of Centralia, IL.
He was a loving and proud uncle to Olivia and Kathryn Ortt, Emmaleigh Brandon, Annika Vergara, Luca Brandon, and Kane Joliff. Tim’s legacy lives on through his family, the chefs he mentored, the friendships he cultivated, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness, leadership, and extraordinary talent. His story began with a young man who loved food and dared to dream, and through hard work and determination, he built a beautiful life centered on love, family, and purpose. Though his kitchen may be quiet now, his legacy never will be. Rest peacefully, Chef Tim. You built the life you dreamed of, inspired others to do the same, and left behind a legacy of love, excellence, and generosity that will live on forever.
