Central Valley Chefs go head-to-head for $5,000 grand prize

A culinary competition is bringing some of the best Central Valley chefs together for a two-month-long competition in downtown Fresno.

My Homies Kitchen is hosting its Chef vs. Chef 2026 competition, featuring 16 chefs and small food businesses competing for a $5,000 grand prize.

Organizers say the event is about more than determining who can make the best dish. It also allows local chefs and food entrepreneurs to showcase their skills and introduce their businesses to new customers.

Throughout the competition, chefs will face off as the field narrows over several weeks leading up to the championship. The competition was created for a much bigger mission. Proceeds from ticket sales will help support the organization’s work.

My Homies Kitchen is a nonprofit that uses food to address broader issues affecting the Central Valley, including food insecurity, health disparities, and barriers to employment.

The organization was created during the COVID-19 pandemic after seeing the impact that preventable diseases and limited access to nutritious foods were having on underserved communities.

Its philosophy centers on the idea that food can be medicine for the body, mind, and soul, with an emphasis on culturally relevant, health-conscious meals, traditional and Indigenous foods, and greater access to nutritious food.

The nonprofit also uses its kitchen for workforce development, providing education and hands-on culinary training. Its training facility serves as a diversion program, creating second-chance opportunities for people looking for a new pathway while developing skills that can lead to careers in the culinary industry.

My Homies Kitchen also works to reduce food waste by teaching participants how to transform local produce and other ingredients that might otherwise go unused into nutritious meals.

Through its programs, the organization says it hopes to connect food, health, sustainability and economic opportunity while serving some of the Central Valley’s most vulnerable communities.

The resources from the restaurant support the Pantry, that at times is difficult to maintain. The competition will help My Homies Kitchen keep serving the Fresno Community.

The Chef vs. Chef competition begins Friday, Sept. 11, at My Homies Kitchen on P Street.

Opening rounds are scheduled for Sept. 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26, as well as Oct. 2 and 3. The competition will then move into its quarterfinal and semifinal rounds later in October.

Community members can attend the competition, watch the chefs go head-to-head, and support the participating local businesses.
