Metro Detroit’s top chefs are joining forces this month for a cause many of them know personally: funding research into one of the most overlooked forms of breast cancer.
Uncork for a Cure returns Friday, October 16 at M1 Concourse in Pontiac, bringing together restaurants including Medusa, She Wolf, Gray Ghost, Mabel Gray, Chartreuse and Vecino for a night of food, wine and fundraising in its 11th year.
“We’re in our 11th year this year, and we have really the best chefs in Metro Detroit all coming together for a cause that’s very dear to so many,” said Flora Migyanka, founder of the Dynami Foundation.
A research gap
The event’s proceeds are directed toward invasive lobular breast cancer, a common subtype that researchers say remains dramatically underfunded.
“The focus of this event is funding research for invasive lobular breast cancer,” Migyanka said, adding that “less than 1% research is dedicated to this common subtype.”
More than 40,000 women are diagnosed with the disease each year, according to Migyanka, who noted it is also harder to catch early. “It’s very difficult to detect on a mammogram,” she said, and younger women are increasingly being diagnosed.
Building a national network
Money raised at last year’s event helped launch a new national research effort.
“We just launched from proceeds from last year’s event the first American research consortium in the United States,” Migyanka said. “It’s called LARC, and it’s basically all the best researchers coming together to change guidelines.”
The consortium includes institutions such as the University of Michigan, Dana-Farber and UPMC.
Looking ahead
Migyanka said the foundation’s work extends beyond a single night of fundraising.
“The foundation has really done a lot to change that and fund research locally and nationally,” she said.
This year’s event will feature a silent and live auction alongside dishes and wine pairings from the participating restaurants. Tickets are available at dynamifoundation.org/uncork-for-a-cure.
