The Kentucky-classic soda, Ale-8-One, was one of six regional sodas to make the Southern Living best Southern sodas list.
Chef and owner of Murray’s Creole Pub in the Highlands of Louisville, Lawrence Weeks, told Southern Living Ale-8 is his favorite soda, specifically the Pawpaw flavor.
“My personal favorite is to drink it in an ice cold glass with a scoop of ice cream as a float. I’m sure for those who partake, a splash of bourbon won’t hurt,” Weeks told Southern Living.
Ale-8 Pawpaw is a limited-time seasonal flavor the company brought back this summer for its 100th birthday. The soda company teamed up with Kentucky State University to produce the tropical, fruity, “Kentucky banana” flavor.
Founded and produced East of Lexington in Winchester, Ale-8 has become a Kentucky staple over the last century. Other sodas picked by chefs were Cheerwine, Dr. Pepper, BAWLS Guarana, Waynesville Soda Jerk’s Peach Soda and Wehrloom Honey’s Root Beer.
Weeks is a Louisville-born chef who comes from a family of cooks, according to the restaurant.
His restaurant is open Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. Brunch is served on Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. and happy hour is held daily from 5 to 6 p.m.
