Authorities on Sunday publicly identified a 51-year-old sushi chef who died after a teenage driver slammed into his parked car Saturday morning along Pacific Coast Highway outside Nobu Malibu, according to multiple media reports and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Lost Hills and Malibu station.
Ryo Uchimiya died from multiple blunt force trauma injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
Uchimiya, a veteran of Nobu’s kitchen staff who worked at the high-end Japanese restaurant for over two decades, had arrived early for his shift and was resting inside his parked sedan around 6:50 a.m. in the 22600 block of Pacific Coast Highway.

Investigators said a 16-year-old boy driving a Range Rover at speeds estimated at 50 mph drifted across the white fog line separating the traffic lanes from the shoulder, striking the rear of Uchimiya’s vehicle.
Security cameras recorded the violent collision, showing the SUV plow directly into the stationary sedan with enough momentum to propel it forward into two adjacent automobiles.

Local workers and residents noted that the specific stretch of Pacific Coast Highway where the crash occurred remains notorious for habitual speeding and dangerous driving conditions.
Sheriff’s officials have not released the identity of the minor driver, and an investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
